Our Shared Humanity
Humanity is the state of being human or humankind. Therefore, Shared humanity means what human beings have in common even though they come from different countries, speak different languages or come from different religions. People have to offer more than their nationality or religion. Hence, one should seek to know who another person is before judging according to their language, nation, colour, religion or race. The better I can understand a person’s perspective, the more comfortable I can connect with them (Rawlings,2019). In the context of My Enemy, My Brother; after Zahed decided to find out much about Najah, he realized that there was something different about Najah and saved him. He understood what they shared was more significant than their differences, and that led to his change of mind.
Most of emerging international conflicts today are a result of language differences, different ethnicities, national boundaries or religious differences and thus, there is a need to embrace our shared humanity and embedding it in people’s hearts. People will embrace shared humanity if only they understand how others are in their lives and what they carry within themselves. As people understand the importance of one another, they change their focus from differences to similarities and equality and love one another and thus solve bounder and religion conflicts.
Therefore, it is of significance to know people better and more than their nationality, race or religion and focus on what is familiar than the differences. By this, we embrace our shared humanity and solve conflicts between people, nations, religions and many more.
