Park Chung Hee Interest in Yi Sun-sin
Yi Sun-sin was a Korean admiral who had been in existence from 1545-1598. Park Chung Hee was interested in making a memory for Yi Sun-sin due to his great victories during his time as a Japanese navy in the Imjin war. Many people looked up to him as a role model, and after his demise, he became an exemplar. President Park Chung Hee decided to remake Hyŏnch’ungsa, which is a Choson shrine to honor Yi Sun-sin. Chung ordered repairs and additions to be made. He ordered a complete makeover of the shrine while donating some of his own resources. In 1962 Park Chung continued ordering the expansion of the shrine. It was now built on land triple the size it had been before. Park Chung Hee also decorated the compound with lanterns and beefed up security. The entire look was now modern, and it was made to a National Monument.
