parking lots in universities
In every large institution such as colleges and universities, it is a necessity to have good parking to help staff, students, and visitors to temporarily store their cares when at the institution. According to Han, Shan, Wang, and Yang (2017), parking, particularly those in the learning institutions like the university, should be designed to be environmentally sustainable and make the movement of people within the institution easier. However, this is not the case in many learning institutions like our university.
According to the current assessment, the parking lot in the university requires a lot of repairs as it lacks many things. The first thing to address within the university is by putting up more street light throughout the parking so that people can quickly move around and access their vehicles. Currently, the university parking lot has very few street lights, thereby making it hard for both students and the staff to access the area during the night. The other thing that needs to be repaired in the parking lot is by reconstructing the area to promote the infiltration of rainwater into the bio-retention regions—one of the worst places to visit in the university after a storm in the parking lot. There is poor management of storm-water, thus reconstructing the site by channeling all the rainwater to a bio-retention hole will help to make the place more accessible.
The other way the university can improve the conditions of its parking is by building shades. More effective shading techniques such as the use of pavements, among other environmentally, will help to make the parking lot more attractive and ease the movement in and out of the university compound. Lastly, the university needs to repaint the parking lot striping and traffic marking so that each driver can park their vehicles correctly without taking a lot of space. As per now, there parking lot strip line and traffic marks are rarely visible.
Question 2
From the current prices of buying and lending books from the bookstores to students, many learners feel that the book store is charging higher rates. According to Caldwell, Srebotnjak, Wang, and Hsia (2013), just like college tuition, the prices of the book have continuously increased dramatically over the past few years, making many students find it hard to obtain learning materials they require. A similar issue is what we are currently experiencing in our university as most of the books have higher prices, both when buying or borrowing them from the bookstore. What is worrying is the fact that many professors are unaware of the cost of the books they assign students instead of choosing the most cost-effective books.
Schell, Ginanni, and Heet (2010) found that many bookstores charge exorbitant prices because there are higher demands for books, while the book production industry itself is experiencing a shallow competition meaning that the seller has a lot of bargaining powers over the demands of the buyers. The other issue that causes bookstores to store their books at higher prices is because the students themselves have no choice in deciding on what book to purchase since learning contents are always assigned and chosen by the professors. Therefore, even when there are alternatives to choose student cannot use. Consequently, given that student does not have to decide to select the contents but have to purchase a particular book, the bookstore take such advantage to increase the prices of the books. The impacts of high book prices by the book stores are low grades recorded by many student students as they cannot afford the books, thus missing a lot of the learning contents which are tested in the final examinations. Therefore, it is a dire need for the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the students get learning material at a lower price from the bookstores nationwide.
