pathology of chemical agents found within the environment as related to impairment of normal form and function
Each student enrolled in the lecture course is required to write a research paper. The research paper will explore the pathology of chemical agents found within the environment as related to impairment of normal form and function (anatomy and physiology) of selected organ systems within the human body. Examples of chemical agents include pharmaceutical drugs, organochlorines and toxicants released during the burning of fuel, greenhouse gases, chemicals released into the air from factories and chemical plants or as run off into nearby bodies of water or green space, etc. A student interested in studying a specific organ system such as the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), would search for journal articles discussing cardiotoxicity. The student interested in learning more about a particular chemical would use the name of the selected chemical or class of chemicals and the word toxicity as search terms. Articles discussing the chemical and adverse health affects will be presented as the results of your query. [unique_solution]Each student′s paper should begin with an introduction. Introductions should provide general information on the topic (normal form and function of the heart and blood vessels, etc.), followed by a general discussion on the toxicant(s) to be discussed such as its mechanism of action, presence in the environment, reason the substance is manufactured, etc. The paragraphs which follow should focus on pathology/disease process, route of exposure, current treatments, suggestions for prevention of exposure and subsequent development of disease, etc. Students may select any organ/organ system to serve as the focus of your research paper. Format: Your paper should be typed in 12 pt. font (Calibri or Times New Roman) and double spaced. Each submission must include a minimum of five (5) pages not including the cover page or works cited page. Please include a page number at the bottom center of each page. Cover and works cited/reference pages are required. Additionally, you are required to use a minimum of five peer-reviewed sources (journal articles, textbooks, dissertations/theses, etc.) and each source should be included in your paper as an in-text citation which contributes to the substance of your work.
