Peacemakers Project: Proposal
Conflicts occur in many settings, such as school, family, and workplace. At a family level, conflicts happen when siblings or members of the extended family have beliefs and views that clash. While some people are able to solve family conflicts peacefully, others hold grudges for years. Lack of respect for other people’s points of view is a significant hindrance to peaceful conflict resolution. I am a victim of unresolved conflict with my younger brother, which I attribute to sibling rivalry and differences in individual temperament.. Whenever I reflect on my relationship with my younger brother, I tend to believe that some people are lucky to become the best of friends with their younger or elder siblings. As Pendley (2016) observes, sibling rivalry is normal and starts in childhood years as kids compete for attention and toys. However, this rivalry is supposed to end as children mature. I disagree with this fact as the rivalry between my younger brother and me is still evident even in our adult years. What started as regular childhood fights have graduated to perpetual bickering and squabbles. At first, I thought that we were competing for attention. Later, I realized that we fight over almost everything, probably due to differences in individual temperaments. We both have unique personalities, which make it hard for us to get along. I admire siblings who develop strong bonds with each other and wish it was the case with my brother. As Sande (2005) notes, conflicts provide opportunities for us to glorify God, grow to be like Christ, as well as serve others, as pointed out by Paul in the book of Corinthians. Now that I am of age, I purpose to pursue peace with my brother at all costs.
For many years, I have been a victim of conflict with my younger brother due to sibling rivalry. It is normal for siblings to fight as they compete for toys and attention. Typically, this rivalry disappears with time as children mature. However, our case is different as we still fight even today, probably due to differences in individual temperaments. However, I am determined to apply the principles learned in the peacemaker workbook and seek peace with my brother.
