Hello Mamie,
In my role as DNP, Just like you stated, I will have a better understanding of evidence-based practice and be in the position to apply it a my place of work and hopefully precept students or be a mentor to other staff members. As a DNP, I plan to utilize evidence based practice in all aspects of care, looking for ways to improve healthcare and health outcome for my patients and their families.
In my understanding of the difference between research and evidence-based practice, evidence-based practice is getting evidence into practice . It is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of patients. Research is planned, logical process, which may be undertaken for the purpose of analyzing relationships between events, or for predicting outcomes. Research entails a systematic inquiry that uses orderly scientific methods to answer questions or solve problems. Research is used to conduct an investigation, the results of which will add to existing evidence. Evidence-based practice, on the other hand, is aimed at the search for and appraisal of best evidence, some of which will be provided by research. Another important distinction between research and evidence-based practice pertains to the different endpoints of each.

Hello Pearl, as you have stated, DPNs are leaders in the nursing field, and their main role is to act as role models to fellow nurses and precepts for student nurses. Because of their better understanding of the evidence-based practice, and direct patient contact while working, DPNs should utilize evidence-based practice, and strive to improve the health outcomes of their patients. According to Tarcan et al. (2017),), DPNs focus on implementing practice change that enhances the satisfaction of nurses, students, and patients. Besides, as DNPs, we have a role in curriculum development. Thus, the curriculum we strive to implement in teaching students should have a strong base of putting the best evidence from research into nursing interventions. Curriculum developed based on EBP emphasizes critical thinking skills and encourages learners to consider the patient’s preferences and values, as well as relevant scientific research. This ensures that trained nurses can work in interdisciplinary teams, adapt better to situations, and utilize informatics in their work. Hello Mamie,
In the United States, EBP has been recognized as a key factor in meeting the Triple Aim in healthcare defined as
- Improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction)
- Improving the health of populations
- Reducing the per capita cost of healthcare (Berwick, Nolan & Whittington, 2008)
The Triple Aim has now been expanded to the Quadruple Aim: the fourth goal being to improve work life and decrease burnout in clinicians (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). Because EBP has been found to empower clinicians and result in higher levels of job satisfaction, it also can assist healthcare systems in achieving the Quadruple Aim (Berwick et al., 2008).

Hi Njideka, you have highlighted that EBP can help the US in achieving the Quadruple Aim. The primary goals of the healthcare system are to provide high quality, safe, and affordable services to its clients. The quadruple model suggests that the United States’ healthcare system will improve by improving the experience of care, improving the health of citizens, and reducing the cost of healthcare services. According to Melnyk & Gallagher-Ford (2019), all these goals can be achieved when EBP is implemented in offering care to patients. This is because EBP focuses on providing safe care, which has been proven by research, thus fewer complications, and chronic illnesses. Besides, patients’ preferences and beliefs are considered; thus, patient satisfaction is also met.

Thank you for your post Ben.
You stated the following ” a teacher as a DNP clinician, while creating an environment that is favorable for implementing EBP to empower other staff is my role. Melnyk et al. (2014) argue that nurses who have mentors who facilitate EBP were more likely to practice within the EBP framework.
I definitely feel what I highlighted above from your post is powerful and will be one of the key components and very main reason EBP will be effectively utilized. If we as DNP practitioners plan to continue the charge forward and advancing our profession we are going to have to be mentors and make sure each link, each individual is empowered to use these resources and show how to use EBP as a tool.
According to Godshall (2016), one example is if health care practitioners do not believe that EBP will result in improved care and patient outcomes, the facilitator needs to provide examples or real-case scenarios of how this would occur” (Godshall, M., 2016).

Hi Tiffany, EBP is a significant factor in delivering high-quality nursing care based on scientific evidence. DPNs are leaders who play a crucial role in mentoring and acting as role models in the fields of nursing with the aim of ensuring nurses are updated, are satisfied in their work, and patient care is delivered effectively and efficiently (Singleton, 2017). DPNs play a crucial role in implementing EBP within nursing units while providing an environment that is favorable for other nurses to implement EBP.
