personal challenge you have faced in a work situation
Describe the most significant personal challenge you have faced in a work situation and the ways in which you overcame the challenge. (Maximum at 250 words)
I volunteered to lead an intern team for a department project during my NBA internship. I fully committed myself to the role: I hosted team-bonding events to build up team chemistry, I worked over-time to study the target industry as fast as possible, and I organized daily meeting to make sure each member’s opinion, advice and criticism can be heard. By the end of first month, my team seemed in a great shape and I became very confident about my leadership. During the midterm review, however, the manager brought forward a problem that directly questioned my leadership ability – he commented that our scheme was too ideal and not compatible with the role of our department, and therefore the team leader failed in guiding towards the correct direction. It was embarrassing that something I felt proud of got denied, in front of my teammates.
(for editor: so the first paragraph I was trying to say that I focused on building team relation, learning project market, and keeping great communication with teammates, but failed to make our plan based on department’s role)
Instead of being defensive, I decided to confront my mistakes. I actively reached out to the manager afterwards for suggestions. To further learn about department’s business models, I approached to and invited two experienced associates to be our advisors. We finally figured out the correct direction when only three weeks left. I then led the team in planning the project timeline, and thanks to the amazing team chemistry we cultivated beforehand, each member knew others well and we quickly claimed our responsibilities. Learned my lessons from midterm, I put extra efforts in making sure we were on the right track.
(for editor: second part, trying to say that I faced my problem, noticed the importance of thinking on a higher level, while still keep working hard)
In the final presentation, not only did our presentation win second place, but it also displayed such viable business models that we received the praise of the top management team.
(for editor: last part about what we achieved eventually)
[for editor: Please notice this essay should not be longer than 250 words, but I have problem shortening it, and I do need your help on shortening too. Thanks. ]
