Planetary urbanism
The majority of the world population is choosing urban life. People are moving from the countryside to the city because they consider urban life better. Over the past years, the urban population has increased compared to the rural one. The economic, social, and political issues are way advanced in the city compared to the rural side. It’s much easier to invest in the town because people are more educated in terms of development. Businesses pick very fast, thus helps them in making a profit that can sustain life in the city. People have the mentality if they move the to city, they are going to make it in life because there are more business ventures that they can learn. The urban life may be considered the best, but it needs a lot of effort to survive, this is because a person has to purchase everything. However, in rural life, people practice farming, thus making life much more comfortable, but people still choose city life. Therefore, this research study will discuss planetary urbanism.
According to (GSD, 2011), over 80 years, the definition of planetary urbanism has not succeeded. However, urbanism still needs to be discussed because urban effects continue to be produced. The population size is getting larger every day, but the space of occupation is tiny. The struggle of people moving from one place to another is increasing because they want to settle in the best home. People move from one town to another with the idea that the other city is doing much better. It has increased in the settlement in the city all because people don’t stay in one place for long, and this affects the economy of the country. The effect of urbanism is not only affecting the city but the whole country, this is because people in the city concentrate a lot in city life, forgetting their background. For instance, when a person decides to move to the city, they either choose to sell their properties back in rural areas or just abandon them. Their rural properties become irrelevant to them to the extent of not going to check on their belongings. Farming is a crucial part of life, and the moment a person stops farming and move to the city to venture in other business, it affects not only him but the people surrounding him. Such an act might affect the economy of the country, especially when two or more people take the same step.
The extension and the moment of planetary urbanism are raising many questions since many cities have reached the maximum population. Many people are still moving to the city, and this is exploiting the city. Congestion is too much, and the rate of insecurity is going up every day. A lot of resources have to be used to make sure everything move smoothly. The government is always on the lookout to make sure there is enough security, excellent infrastructure, and this makes the economy of the country to be hard. The citizen will suffer the ordeal since they are the taxpayers.
Urban studies are critical to the students to understand because they are the future. They need to have an understanding of the positive and the negative of planetary urbanism. The vision of the world starts today and by understanding the dos and don’t is very important for the future of tomorrow. Taking good care of the territories today will positively impact the future, and therefore, the best people should do is to make sure they know. By doing so, they will be able to avoid losses in the future, thus improving people relationship.
There are problems associated with urban studies, that is growth and culture (Monti, 2020). The creation of new scales is now hard to submit since everyone wants to be involved, thus limiting the development. There is too much competition in the shopping facilities to the extent that it’s impossible to make a sale. On the other hand, people have now forgotten about the culture, everyone is doing as their wish, and no one is following the norms. The discipline that comes with the rules gathered from the culture is no longer supported. The city has now come to a standstill, no new modern is being introduced, and therefore there is no development.
Minuel Castells, Mike Davis and Louis Wirth have talked about planetary urbanism, and Neal Brenners gathered much information from their discussion. Each week there are millions of migrants moving to the city to the extent that the urban population has outnumbered the number in the countryside. This has led to pause the state projects since the country has to take care of the people and make sure they settle. High increase in unemployment is expected after such an ordeal, thus leading the people to depend more on the government. Low production by citizens in a state contributes to a political economy.
Neal Brenners give an example of how people move to a city they do not know about its history. It takes a lot of time to adapt, and this makes the city to be on a standstill. The people may choose not to follow what they found and create their new rules. It’s the people who can help a city to grow, and at the same, they are the ones who drag it behind. As much as people still get to move, the more a country gets dragged behind in terms of economy. Many are the time when these people are not aware of their reason for moving, and they don’t have a means of income or money for investments.
Planetary urbanism can also cause family breakage, and this is because when a family choose city life, they expect their life to be bright. Starting up a new project takes time, and for a person to see the fruits, it takes much longer. When things don’t go as expected, then problems may start arising in a family. Many are times when one person is blamed, and since he is not ready to accept what to him, he did not cause then things get sour. Such families split each moving to what they call looking for a better pasture and end up separated. When one of them gets comfortable, he may choose not to come, and he may even end up starting another family.
To conclude, as discussed above, planetary urbanism may impact the world positively or negatively. The negativity is too much since the world is no longer in the move, everything looks settled, but that’s because the migrants are still trying to adapt. There is no growth in terms of business ventures, and there no people to promote others because most of the people are new in the city. The city is more congested, thus contributing to insecurity in the city. People are no longer safe as much as they want to be in the city, and as seen above, it makes them dormant because they are afraid of the outside world. It’s also discussed about the culture which the people has forgotten and do not have the effort to adapt. People move to the city and choose to follow what they find to be convenient to them since their interest is what suits them best. They also contemplate the culture is not related to them since they already have a culture to follow from their previous city.
Coronavirus is a pandemic disease that has affected the people globally; its effect is enormous to the world. This disease is contagious, some norms should be followed to avoid catching the virus, which is maintaining high hygiene and keeping distance. A city is always crowded, and therefore it’s advised to stay back at home. The disease has created a lot of fear and tension among the people. People who were living as a family before are now living as strangers. Meeting on the street and saying hi is a normal thing, but with coronavirus on the rise, things have changed. Planetary urbanism will be profoundly affected because people are exercising social distancing to avoid catching the virus. Fear has risen in the last couple of months since death rise is very high. Therefore, city life will be profoundly affected because it will take time before things go back to normal and for people to interact regularly.
