Planning Practicum Hours / Learning Objectives

One of the objectives of the practicum will be to ensure that all the medical undertakings underpinned are of proper scientific backing. Scientific backing in the medical field is paramount for correct diagnosis and prognosis. It is mandatory to use science-based concepts in evaluating the health care delivery system.  Therefore, during the practicum, it is essential to focus on activities that will make me achieve this objective. Such include activities that emphasize the integration of theoretical learning during the internship. For example, having morning discussions on a specific aspect that will be done clinically during that practicum day is vital to grasping a concept. Group discussions and focusing on problem-based learning can be critical in medicine (Wyer, 2019) Practitioners have to embrace this by using problems as foci points during conversations, and later on doing them practically in hospital. I intend to have group discussions during the morning hours from 8 am to 11 am. These discussions will focus on understanding the concepts dealt with each day. After that, from 11 am onwards, the clinical can resume as usual.

Another objective to be focused on during the practicum is embracing information technology for the betterment of health care delivery. Information technology focuses on assisting in service dispensation, and therefore, any health care practitioner must acquaint themselves with such kind of technology to become better practitioners. One of the activities that I will be doing to ensure that I embrace IT in practice will be evaluating the appropriateness of the information that a healthcare consumer has. A health care consumer can offer valid data that can be fundamental in health care delivery (Hampden et al., 2017). Therefore, technology can play a crucial role in such evaluation during my practice sessions. I intend to focus more on technology, especially during the last weeks of my practicum (week 8 through to 11) as such skills should be fresh even after my internship and into my real health care practice. Such will take place from 11 am after group discussions onwards during those weeks.

Health care policy formulation is fundamental for a practitioner who intends to become a monumental figure in the health care system (Olveira et al., 2018). Another objective will be to ensure that the formulation process of health care takes place and remains a continuous process during my practicum. Policy formulation will depend purely on what I experience during the internship, which will guide my thinking of what needs to change through legislation. Some of the activities include reading through legislative processes that have been done before in a specific area and using that knowledge to suggest further improvements in other areas. That will not only breed belief, but also improve on the ability to become an influential policymaker. The epicenter of the practicum will take place during the fifth week of my schedule.  The reason is so that I may have enough time to understand policy formulation and have time also to engage in the process. The integration of the policy formulation will take place during group discussions. Then later on during the day, I will gauge on different aspects of the field that need amendment, and make suggestions on possible formulations to be enacted.
