Academic dishonesty or misconduct refers to the actions undertaken by students that interfere with the established policies in regards to cheating in a formal academic exercise. The primary examples of these processes include fabrication, plagiarism, sabotage, deception, and fraud in exams. Based on the Policy Violation examples provided, certain instances may arise during my academic career. The course may demand the need for in-depth collaboration among students and, therefore, the primary obligation to verify with the instructor the established limits and the nature of the participation. Being a part-time student can also tempt an individual to seek academic assistance for essay mills and thus cheat by presenting an assignment done by another person. Lastly, the lack of proper comprehension of inputting citations can result in unintentional plagiarism by failing to adequately acknowledge the source of information utilized in the submitted paper.
Academic fraud tends to undermine the fundamental purpose of the educational system, primarily graduate school. The academic industry aims to generate information and equip the learners with knowledge and skill to adequately perform in the labor market. Potential employers utilize degrees as an essential marker for an individual’s ability, and hence a dishonest student will lack the required skills. This will result in reluctance from the employers to hire individuals from the affected learning institutions regardless of there being honest students. Another primary effect is the negative impact experienced by academic companies. Institutions riddled with numerous cheating scandals tend to lose credibility and thus lose potential investors, prospective employers, and learners.
Moreover, it interferes with the teaching capability of the faculty members, especially the educators, whereby the educational atmosphere becomes predominated with policing rather than educating the learners. This results in the underproduction of knowledge, thus significantly affecting the productive educator-learner interactions. Consequently, it is paramount for a student to familiarize themselves with the policies to avoid academic dishonesty thoroughly.
