The writing you are required to do in your lifetime varies greatly. Personal writing may include letters and e-mails, while professional writing may include e-mails, business letters, proposals, and reports. Communicating effectively and professionally is an important skill that can help you in all aspects of your life. You will find that the ability to effectively present yourself and your ideas in writing can also help you build your skill in critically analyzing the writings, ideas, and supporting evidence presented by others.

Presenting your own thoughts is a valuable skill, but the ability to analyze the ideas of others is equally important to emphasize your arguments or support your position. One of the ways to do this is through paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is your own version of the key information and ideas of someone else, presented in a different form. It is also a legitimate way to borrow from a source—as long as you accurately cite the source! The mental skills needed to successfully paraphrase can allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the original and connect that back to your own arguments.

Often, professional writing requires more than simply being able to express thoughts or opinions; it also requires the ability to support those thoughts or opinions with valid, credible, evidence-based research. The basic research typically done in undergraduate programs involves searching for information, finding scholarly or professional resources about the information, and using critical thinking to analyze and interpret the information.

Preparation

Imagine that the annotated bibliography you completed in Assessment 5 was so good that your supervisor has now asked you to write her presentation for her. The presentation must address a controversy in psychology and present both sides of the controversy equally. But you will also need to determine which side makes the most compelling argument based on the research you have found.

Please be sure you use the same topic you selected in Assessment 5.

Use the resources from your annotated bibliography. Although you may find that not all of the articles from the bibliography will provide the support you need for this assessment, you will still need to cite and reference at least five recent scholarly resources.

Follow APA guidelines for formatting this assessment, and include an abstract.

Requirements

Write an APA-formatted article on a controversy in psychology in which you:

• Explain both sides of a controversy from a psychological perspective. (This should be done within your introduction.)
• Analyze the research on the controversy from differing perspectives.
  • Present one side of the controversy and the research that supports it. Be sure you explain how the research was conducted, as well as any assumptions made by the researcher(s).
  • Present the other side of the controversy and the research that supports it. Explain how the research was conducted, as well as any assumptions made by the researcher(s).
• Explain the implications of the research findings. Be sure you include any ethical implications. (This should be done as part of your conclusion.)

• Number of pages: 4–6 of content, in addition to a title page, an abstract, and a references page.
• At least 5 current scholarly or professional resources.
