Physics is the most fundamental science as it explains phenomena in the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond. It is arguably one of the sciences that challenges our imaginations using Einstein’s concept of relativity, electromagnetism, the string theory, and its application in the development of technology such as in the discovery of computers and lasers. Such techniques have transformed different sectors such as engineering and medical field with applications ranging from cancer treatment, Joint replacement to development of sustainable energy solutions.

Medical profession

The branch of physics, also known as medical physics, applies principles of physics to healthcare. It involves developing tools and treatments used to treat human beings. Medical physics is divided into many other branches, each applying a specific principle to ensure its efficiency and effectiveness. Such branches include medical imaging, radiology, and nuclear medicine. Some other applications in equipment such as ventilators work by taking into account the knowledge from fluid pressure and pulse frequency. Additionally, advancement in medical technology would not have been possible without the principles and laws in physics formulated several centuries ago.

Medical tools- the principle of electromagnetism

The principle describes the relationship between magnetism and electricity by stating that one force mediates the interaction between positive and negative charges. Such a principle has led to the development of diagnostic radiology, which is a medical imaging technology, also known as Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI scanners apply the principle of magnetism to take quality images of the human’s inner body parts. Since the human body contains seventy percent of water, which constitutes a lot of hydrogen molecules, the scanner works by monitoring the distribution and nuclear spin of hydrogen molecules. The scanner produces powerful radio waves and magnetic fields to create images of body parts hence detecting areas with injuries or disorders. The magnetic field is usually between a range of 0.2 to 3 teslas, which then aligns protons, also known as spins (Grover et al. 2015). The scanner produces a radio frequency in the course of the procedure, thus causing the magnetic field to alternate. The energy produced by the magnetic field is absorbed by the protons hence causing the spins to flip. When the magnetic field is turned off, the protons’ spins are normalized, thus producing a radio signal measured by the receivers.

Public health emergency- the principle of uncertainty

The principle of uncertainty was proposed by a German physicist, Werner Heisenberg’s, in 1927. It states that science is less clear than it was initially thought. In quantum mechanics, the principle shows that the smallest particles in nature behave in a manner that cannot be predicted. It continues to illustrate that the position and momentum of a particle cannot be measured with absolute precision, and the more one understands the position, the less they can predict the momentum (Hodges, 2018). It is vital to know that the field of science has random and unpredictable outcomes and physicist in the emergency medical sector needs to change their belief that knowing the environment will provide all the answers they sort. Instead, to effectively operate, they need to understand that they can neither have all the answers nor can they predict the future. Currently, the hazards ranging from climate change to bioterrorism presents a more complex challenge that should be an example that the known world will not provide the solutions we are looking for to address these public health challenges. The systems have to change and adapt to the changing complexities of these health emergency issues.
