Professional Nursing, Public Image, Gender Representation and Future Trends.

  1. Factors affecting Public Image of Professional Nursing

In a study published in 2017, Rubbi et al. (2017) outline several factors that affect the public’s image of professional nurses. These factors include the level of interaction between a person and a nurse in a healthcare setting, the degree to which the person understands a licensed nurse’s work and its nature in a healthcare environment, and access to information regarding a nurse’s poor or low salary/wage.

The members of the public should understand and view professional nurses as essential individuals in any healthcare setting as it deals with administering prescription drugs, bridging communication between doctors and patients, caring for patients, and supervising nurse aides. For these reasons, individuals need to support nurses in the quest for quality healthcare services.

  1. Gender Inclusion and exclusion in the nursing profession

According to Ozdemir, Akansel, and Tunk (2008), a female nurse is generous, humble, and nurturing, all of which are crucial for a nursing role. These are the advantages of having a female nurse. On the other hand, male nurses are elements of socialization, able to accomplish tasks quickly, lead and compete, all of which are necessary for leadership in the nursing profession (Ozdemir, Akansel & Tunk, 2008). These unique abilities are the advantages of having a male nurse.

Gender exclusivity ruins the growth and development of the nursing career. By focusing on either of the genders, a health institution risks losing either leadership abilities by excluding men or losing the nurturing and caring aspects of the nursing profession by excluding women.

  1. Present and Future Trends in Nursing

In the present, the nursing profession is rapidly changing in four significant areas, namely enhanced patient outcomes, adoption of smart technology of industry 4.0, push for continued learning and improvement in care delivery (Catalano, 2019). In the future, advanced technologies of artificial intelligence and 3-D printing in medicine will shape the nursing profession.
