The interviewee is an academic writer undertaking a Ph.D. in nursing. Having been in the industry for more than four years, the interviewee has gained relevant skills hence becoming a perfectionist. He has previously worked in various subjects, namely, nursing, project management, and criminology. These and other assignments have enabled him to acquire knowledge of different writing formats. The writer’s vast experience allows him to develop quality information content devoid of plagiarism and grammar errors.
Nursing, which is his specialty, has different types of writing, namely; health history, nursing note, nursing care plan, nursing resume, medical literature review, among others. The kind of wring in his field is expository, which aims to explain to the reader the subject matter of the topic involved, giving relevant evidence, and suitable discussions to enhance clarity and understanding. He stated that the main reason for nursing academic writing is to strengthen information and idea-sharing and to ensure that nursing students can effectively and professionally communicate in this field. While other basic conventions like grammar, sentence structure, spelling punctuation, and capitalization are mandatory to use in any other field, the interviewee says that academic writing in nursing involves texts that are accurate, precise, and objective free from ambiguity. Nursing is both a scientific and professional field; hence he uses APA style of referencing across all genres. However, during training, he used of MLA style of referencing.
Expository writing is quite involving in terms of content; hence one has to research more. The greatest challenge the writer interviewee faced when beginning this kind of writing was lack of confidence and perfectionism. At one point, he felt like the information he gave was not enough. Perfectionism is a problem with many people and was a great challenge submitting work that he thought did not meet all required standards. The interviewee expects that students planning to major in writing in this field to emphasize preventive health care to prevent most chronic diseases and address the issue of lifestyle dieting to reduce these conditions.
