This significantly increased the size of America. Another significant factor that led to the expansion of America was the Mexican American war. In the course of this war, a considerable size of the current western US was attained. Monroes Doctrine also contributed to the American foreign policy. According to the doctrine, both north and south America were all under America, and Europeans had no business meddling with the territory. The civil war was one of the devastating events n American history. The effects were so overwhelming that they are still evident up to date. Even worse, a significant number of people lost their lives. The case if the civil war can be traced back to the slavery regime when the country depended on slavery for free labor. The British colonies owned plantations where they planted cash crops like tobacco, and since there was so much labor needed in the farms, the use of slavery for free labor became common practice all over the southern states. However, the northerners were against slavery, and this caused tension between the two regions. This led to new rules which regarded a slave as a 3/5 person.

The northern free states and the southern states were worried that either could acquire more power. This eventually led to the Missouri compromise of 1820.
