Qualitative Studies
Background of Study
- Summary of studies. Include problem, significance to nursing, purpose, objective, and research question.
In the first research study by Shelley et al., the aim is to translate research into clinical practice. The process has been identified as challenging The main aim of the research is to establish an appropriate process that can be used in achieving the gestational diabetes mellitus care for the nurses in healthcare organization. The significance of the research is to establish appropriate guidance and proper mechanisms that can be used in overcoming barriers in the healthcare institution. The purpose of this research study is to find the best approach and care that can be used by the nurses so as they can provide care to the patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. The research question is What are the best approaches that can be used to provide care to gestational diabetes mellitus patients?
In the article authored by Pennington et al, the paper discussion involves an investigation of different factors that are influencing women especially when the women are needing the diabetes preventive care. Moreover, the targeted population for the research are the women who have been pregnant and they are suffering from the gestational diabetes. The analysis I from the perspectives of the GP The objective of the research is to explore on the significance and the role that GP plays when dealing with care. Therefore, the research is significant and has objectives of improving on the pregnant women care when they are suffering from diabetes.
.
How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?
Shelley et al in the research findings are instrumental and they support the selected nursing practice. The findings helps the nurses to collaborate with other stakeholders in the organization and ensure that these stakeholders understand nursing requirements and support the nurses when they are handling patients in the organization. Therefore, it is an important research study. The research article authored by Pennington et al is instrumental and supports the practice of nursing in healthcare institutions. The research ensures that there is a provision of information on how issues are conducted in the organization and allows the nurses to collaborate together while they are handling challenges in the healthcare institution.
- Discuss how these two articles will be used to answer your PICOT question.
The two articles are instrumental and they can be used in providing vital information needed in answering the PICOT question. Before determining how the articles help in answering the picot question, there should be an understanding on what the PICOT question entails. In this aspect, the PICOT question reads, how does the earlier patient education on risk factors in contracting gestational diabetes mellitus assist in the treatment and prevention of the disease? The articles provide information on the risk factors that patients with gestational diabetes face. Further, the articles divulge on mechanisms and processes that can be implemented in healthcare organizations so as to take care of the patients suffering from gestational diabetes. Evidence based practice is an outcome of the research and it helps the nurses to collaborate and communicate effectively when they are handling gestational diabetes patients. The relevance of these two articles are effective and they promote on success development in healthcare organizations and handling the gestational diabetes patients in the society. Information presented in these articles can be used even by future generation of nurses as the information is an evidence based piece of information in healthcare institutions.
- Describe how the interventions and comparison groups in the articles compare to those identified in your PICOT question.
In the two articles, the intervention groups that were identified include pregnant women who are suffering from gestational diabetes and the second article discussed patients who needed care from the diabetes mellitus cases. There is a comparison with the population that is highlighted in the research study. The picot question seeks on improving education and awareness creation especially to the patients in the society and preventing them from contracting the diabetes mellitus. There is a comparison in the articles and the PICOT question because the populations under study are the members who are suffering from t5he gestational diabetes or diabetes mellitus. The focus is on addressing issues in the same healthcare path hence the similarities evident in the process. The research findings in the article can be used in discussing vital information needed to handle patients with diabetes mellitus which is similar to the needs of the picot question in the research study.
Method of Study:
- State the methods of the two articles you are comparing and describe how they are different.
Shelley et al research study was a qualitative research and the main application was a descriptive research study. In the descriptive research study, the researchers aimed at using semi-structured interviews that were conducted through the telephones. Further, there were staff members who were involved in the process and their need was to handle the implementation of the MOC project occurring at regional states. The research methods recruited eight participants while five out of the eight were coming from one site On the other hand, Pennington et al research method was qualitative and there were semi-structured face to face interviews conducted. The total number of participants were 16 and these participants were the women who had an experience with GDM. Further, the research method allowed for the application of the thematic content analysis mechanisms.
- Consider the methods you identified in your chosen articles and state one benefit and one limitation of each method.
The benefit of the qualitative research method is that the researchers focused on semi-structured interviews. The advantage is that there is a provision of two way communication methods through the interview process. Further, it gives the interviewers an opportunity to learn about the questions, answers and reasons behind the answers that are provided in the research study. The limitation of the study is that it requires skills to develop the questions and also some participants might be unwilling to answer the questions, hence jeopardizing data collection process.
Results of Study
- Summarize the key findings of each study in one or two comprehensive paragraphs.
In Pennington et al research, the findings were that the groups of women believed the gestational diabetes mellitus care is best applied by the GPs who are doing follow-ups. The suggested recalls and presence of reminders would allow for the improvement of care. The role of the GPs was to give assistance and exercise advices to improve on women health. The literacy of the women influenced the relationship that they held with the GPs. In the pother article, Shelley et al., there are four main themes that were identified in the research. The first theme is that there is a catalyst for positive change in healthcare, there is a need for ensuring a management of project logistics, there is a desire to achieve change and nurses should make sure that they overcome barriers in the healthcare institution.
- What are the implications of the two studies in nursing practice?
The two studies have an implication in nursing environment. The first implication is that the two research studies help in understanding the challenges that nurses face when they are taking care of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. Therefore, through the research findings, nurses will understand on their roles and learn on how to prevent barriers hence giving better care to the patients suffering from diabetes mellitus.
Ethical Considerations
- Discuss two ethical consideration in conducting research.
The two ethical considerations in the two research is an informed consent. The authors sought after an informed consent and ensured that there was consent before engaging the participants in the research study. The second ethical consideration is that there was no coercesion among the participants of the study. The selected participants willingly took part in the research study. There was no force or coercion hence an effective mechanism in ethical consideration.
- Describe how the researchers in the two articles you choose took these ethical considerations into account while performing their research.
The researchers in the two articles were keen and ethical when they were conducting the research. They adhered to the research question and ensured that there was no harm of the participants of the research study. Further, the researchers stated that they would eliminate on biases by providing information in the right manner that it appeared without any form of alteration taking place. These are effective considerations that the researchers made so as to ensure an elimination of biasness and unethical research study.
