Racism​ and Sexism in video games

Racism is whereby people are being discriminated against or treated unfairly due to the person’s color and background, whereas Sexism means stereotyping or discrimination against gender roles. Racism and Sexism in video games have been a threat not only to kids but society as a whole. The danger comes from the effects of playing these games as it leads to male and female developing beliefs about the roles and capabilities of men and women from their depictions. In the gaming world, there are male-dominated, while women get access to attention just for playing as well. Therefore, treatment between the two roles against the outside world is bound to be different. Generally speaking as a woman, our go-to superpower to fight against the evil of Sexism in this world is to be silent for men to undermine our integrity. Women usually feel restricted in executing their duties. They are mandated to follow instructions given by the men. It takes some percentage of women to actually speak up and stand for themselves to show it’s really not acceptable for only men to rule. This affects women more purely because it’s impossible to ignore.

The connection between video games and real-life violence has never been meaningfully established because certain gun violence cases that happen outside of America are shallow as compared. In these kinds of violent and aggressive games, black people are likely to engage in gang activities, robbery, and so on.

According to a landmark 2009, study shows that 85% of game characters are white, less than 15% of the video game universe for black, Asians, Hispanics, Indians, Native Americans, and mixed-race people. In video games, race can be used to give context based on the race being defined by the character who he or she is because the setting is used in this game to understand the aspects better. It all comes from us but, most importantly, the main person behind the creation of this particular game. Also, games sometimes inform the player how the outside world is being viewed concerning their race.

Those who played as a black character were more likely to agree that African Americans would be well off whites if they only tried harder. Furthermore, they are more likely to associate pictures as African Americans to negative words such as “terrible” or “horrible.”

In this scenario, correlation doesn’t not equal causation. They’re making players use black characters rather than measuring their level of aggression under the game. They didn’t add any African American to also volunteer for him or her to play as well, or better still, they can switch sides as the African American student to play with a white character. Tests are supposed to be conducted more than one. They should’ve tried similar games as well. Of course, someone who just broke out of prison is going to be more aggressive than someone who drove to a chapel that doesn’t mean it’s racist.

Players don’t typically develop an understanding of the character’s culture to help defeat unless it’s based on certain stereotypes they may have before playing the game. People who already think poorly of blacks chose those characters as they feel they are violent not that video games influenced racism. If there should be an elimination of not having any black or other races in games anymore, that would be racist. The professor or people conducting it did not stop to think that people that some of the participants might have racial biases rather than to blame the game. Assigning a white person a black character might have forced them to jokingly adopt racist stereotypes. They didn’t check how the test subjects felt about white people and violence. Maybe the white students happened to be racist, which we are not sure of but most definitely. Painting people of specific ethnic, religious backgrounds, gender, and sexual orientations in a particular light in any form can affect public perception. This experiment was not conducted accordingly.
