Reasons for Poor School Achievement
Poor school achievement has been a significant issue affecting the development of many schools. Research shows that schools that offer boarding services to students have excellent performance than day schools. The reason behind this is that students have enough time to revise for their exams while the day scholar students lack enough time to revise for their exams (Buck & Torgesen, 2018). Poor school performance is caused by poverty, cultural diversity among the students, and racism, among other factors. Identifying various reasons for the poor school achievement and formulating mechanisms for abating them, is very important in ensuring school development.
Poverty is a significant reason for poor school achievement. Research shows that students from minority backgrounds face difficulties in achieving excellent performance as compared to Asian or white students (Buck & Torgesen, 2018). Schools with low returns have the most significant numbers of students who live below the poverty line. Schools with low-income students have high teacher turnover, less-experienced teachers, and inadequate access to high quality resources.
Another reason for poor achievement in schools is cultural diversity among the students. Culturally diverse students have poor performance in schools due to many reasons. For instance, American schools are culturally hostile to students of a different color (Buck & Torgesen, 2018). In most circumstances, the instructions given to the minority students are not an incompatibility with their cultural beliefs.
Cultural diversity in schools can be mitigated by improving interactions between the students and teachers, which enhances teamwork. It is suggested that both social and political upheavals are essential in ending oppression as well as underachievement of minority students (Berry, 2018). The government should intervene by providing high quality services to schools that handle minority students to improve their performance.
Conclusion
Poor school achievement occurs due to several reasons, such as poverty and cultural diversity among students. Schools with students coming from minority backgrounds have less experienced teachers and limited access to quality services. Cultural diversity in schools can be eliminated by incorporating teamwork among the students. The government should provide enough services to schools with minority students.
