Reflective Essay: Animals and Society
The presentations talk about service animals and emotional animals when it comes to people with disabilities. These animals may be confused for being just pets to these people, but they are more than that. For instance, the service animals, which in most cases are always dogs, are trained animals taught and trained to provide services to people with disabilities. Such services include helping the blind, pulling wheelchairs for the physically disabled and alerting the deaf among other specialised tasks. The emotional animals, from their names, provide any emotional support to people. Such supports include calming down a person having a panic attack or those with PTSD.
These animals, however, cannot be everywhere with these persons as there are rules that restrict them. More so, where these animals are allowed, they should answer the two most important questions. The dog must be a service animal and should precisely show what it does to help the person involved with their disability. Despite being allowed most places with the person, they can also be removed based on their behaviour and if the owner does not do anything about it. This action makes sense as it avoids any damages that might be caused by the animal. Also, service animals are not only for people with disabilities but also for anyone as they can provide other particular tasks when trained.
The emotional animal, on the other hand, is considered therapeutic. Most people with emotional animals are those who suffer from panic attacks mostly caused by PTSD. They are deemed therapeutic as they are primarily used in medical treatment plans that entail therapy. They are not considered service animals as they do not perform tasks but rather offer comfort in the form of companionship that sometimes helps in phobias and anxiety.
Therefore, animals are essential in society, and it all depends on the training. Once trained, these animals can perform any task and do anything that is acquired of them. Some might say that animals are sometimes better than humans.
