Research Paper Proposal Outline
Working Title: the Hong Kong Protest
- Abstract “Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019” was a bill proposed by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in February 2019 to establish a mechanism for transfers of fugitives not only for Taiwan, but also for Mainland China and Macau, which are currently excluded in the existing laws. It was a proposed bill regarding extradition to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance in relation to special surrender arrangements and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance so that arrangements for mutual legal assistance can be made between Hong Kong and any place outside Hong Kong. The bill was meant to fill gaps and loopholes in Hong Kong law as well as gain supports from central government of Mainland China. However, this bill was considered as an erosion of legal system of Hong Kong and its built-in safeguards under the principle of “one country, two systems” by the Hong Kong society. Therefore, multiple protests were held to against the bill in Hong Kong. However, these protests were not held in peace. Violence were involved and numerous innocent people were hurt. (good job including background information to establish context, but be sure that you are able to use this information to tie-in your thesis and the specific topic in the news media outlets that you will be analyzing.)

- Topic and Working Thesis
- My research is about the violence in Hong Kong protest which associates with Article iii from UDHR: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.( this is potentially a good connect, but be sure in the final project to explain how the UDHR Article and the media coverage relate to one another.)
- News sources from different media on same topic might deliver different ideas to readers with different tone, vocabulary, narrative, ways of describing, etc. Therefore, engaging numerous news sources from different authors is good for comprehending the true story.( this is a great approach. Just be sure to make a thesis/argument about how the event is portrayed differently, or similarly, in different news outlets and what this tells us about how the UDHR Article you are dealing with is viewed.)

I will use this source to demonstrate that tone will lead different conclusion to the reader. in addition, Images will increase the credibility of an article.( good, analytical approach. Just be sure to also explain the overall significance of things like tone and image, i.e., what effect do they have and what does that say about the media source?)

The article shows that how bad was the violence was in the protest.

(please do include 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources, Your secondary sources do not need to be on the same specific topic you are looking at. They can be about something related but different, e.g. about media bias in general, about Chinese media or western media, etc.)
- Project Completion Plan
the next two things I will do to further this project are finding two more scholarly, secondary sources to support my thesis, and list a table to compare my sources from different aspects, such as: tone, vocabulary, narrative, etc.
- Request for Feedback
Actually, I’m a little confused, I’m not really sure what I am going to do is right. So, I am supposed to find 5 different new sources on an event that are related to one of the articles from UDHR, and then analyze these 5 sources from different angle, Right? (you can analyze them from the same “angle” but be sure that your argument is about how the event is portrayed in these 5 sources, and what that tells us about your UDHR Article (i.e. the UDHR Article III is relative, subjective, contentious, etc).)
You have a good topic and seem to have a good grasp on the overall context, but please see my in-text comments, and make sure to come up with a thesis for the final project that deals specifically with media coverage/depictions. Please send me an email or come talk to me in my office hours if you would like to discuss ways to use the topic and sources you already haveto make an effective argument based on the prompt and the research question on pg. 8 of the Omnibus tome.
