Procedure Methods and Measurements

The primary research method for this study will include a carefully designed research questionnaire and interviews to determine and understand the respondents ‘compassion level, which, in theory, is a type of qualitative research. The qualitative methodological approach will be applied for this study due to its nature of best describing, contextualizing, and interpreting existing literature to provide an in-depth insight into the subject under study. To be able to complete the research study, it is necessary to define a specific population to focus on.  This defines which group of people will be included in order to gather sufficient information that can be used to answer the proposed research questions. In this study, the proposed sample population will be mixed genders consisting of 300 nurses working in the medical, surgical clinics, and intensive care units of Bellevue Hospital. Besides, the respondents will be mixed of mixed ages consisting of a group between 18-30years, 31-45 years, and 46-55 years. The reason to use respondents over the age of 18years was based on ethical reasons, as permission is less likely to be easy to get from respondents under the age of 18 years.

To obtain sufficient information for the study, questionnaires will be sent by mail, and the respondent will fill them out themselves and resend their answers for analysis. Additionally, a set of interview questions will be sent via the phone, and responses of the respondents recorded for analysis. The structure of the questions that will be adopted for this study will be closed-ended questions with 2-3 options as an answer to each question. Open-ended questions will be adopted for the research because of its ability to provide the researcher with numerical data that can be statistically analyzed to find trends, patterns, and correlations. Furthermore, the use of an online approach to obtain information from the respondents is appropriate because the researcher can easily access a large sample. Also, the researchers have some control over who is included in the sample, thus can target a specific sample group. Additionally, online surveying is appropriate for this study because it is cheap, and responses can be obtained easily.

Presentation of Ethical Considerations

At the moment, there are o ethical issues that can be seen from this proposed research study. The reason for this is that:

  1. All respondents are over the age of 18 years
  2. All information obtained from the respondents will be confidential.
  3. The research study will pose any risk to the respondents
  4. The researcher will obtain consent from the respondents before commencing the research study.

Data analysis

The answers obtained for the questionnaires and interviews will be analyzed based on the three options available. A graph will be drawn to represent the finding based on the answers given by the respondents.

Expected Results

It is expected that gender significantly affects the compassion level of nurses. This is because women are generally more empathetic and caring than men. Also, it is expected that marital status significantly affects the level of compassion among nurses. That is, married nurses are more compassionate towards their patients than single nurses.

Furthermore, it is expected that age will significantly affect nurses’ compassion level. That is, older nurses of ages between 45-56 years will be more compassionate than nurses of ages 18-30 years.  Moreover, it is expected that the educational level will not affect the level of compassion among nurses. Finally, working units significantly affects the level of compassion among nurses. That is, nurses working in intensive care units will be more compassionate than those working in general clinics.

Expected Limitations of the Study

The sample size is not large enough to validate the research findings. Besides, due to the adoption of online methods like use of emails in data collection could have the following limitation; the lack of anonymity may cause the respondent to answer less honestly, the data collected may be unreliable or incomplete, the response rate could be slow, and there is more risk of researcher bias.

Recommendation for Future Research

For future research, I would recommend that the researcher use a large sample size in order to validate the research findings.
