Response: Cultural Views of Sexuality
If we may carry out research on all the cultures of the world and how every one of them perceives sexuality, we might end up coming with mixed views and beliefs that some may be out of our expectations. They all matter by the end of the day as far as sexuality is concerned. According to the guest speaker’s research on the few sampled cultures, I was able to learn that things vary as we move across our cultures. At some point, the Aka community values virginity until one gets married. The contrary is evident among the Tukano of South America.
In that case, we have to appreciate the fact that people grow in different environments where the society around forces them to subscribe to certain beliefs. As for that matter, the world is tolerating various sexual behaviors, including masturbation, incest, and early marriages, among others, as a result of cultural diversities. However, I suggest that a new culture is set up, if possible, to dilute all these cultures and bring uniformity and equal sexual beliefs and new taboos in society.
It is not satisfactory, however, how the guest speaker never sampled a tribe from almost every continent rather than just focusing on the primitive ends only. Supposing the speaker had availed the beliefs of some of the communities from Asia and Europe; then I guess we would have had a comprehensive glimpse of the issue at hand. Nevertheless, the matter of sexuality is turning to a new form as time goes by. The latter is brought about by independence and freedom offered by the cultures and the society at large. So then, aspects such as virginity and masturbation no longer sound strange as of this time. Anyway, I suggest the reconciliation we need to make as the society is that of everyone’s mind and souls to accept the fact that old sexual beliefs were the best.
