RESPONSE TO   ARTICLE ON ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION.

Following your articles, I would like to appreciate you for the effort you are making to save nature. I have been closely following and keenly reading your articles.  They motivate me as I pursue my course .The more interesting article I come across is about environmental degradation and climate change. I totally agree with you “that environmental degradation is resulting from the changes involving urbanization, agricultural intensification, economic growth, and poverty, institutional and technological activities and rising energy use”. Environmental conservation is a duty of every person and all peoples should be educated about this. Having individual like you who are willingly offering guidance on matters of environment is a blessing, to the world because I believe that most of the people worldwide will come across your articles and get the message on environmental degradation.

It is true that the modern society population is growing more rapidly. (McKibben,Bill.2007) people are migrating from their rural areas to major cities to search for jobs .This also results to challenge of accommodation in the cities and towns since not all people will get a house at town centers leading to slums .The only solution here is mushrooming of slums where these new population from rural areas may get residential houses. As a result it is a major source of alienated people from environment and their communities to the point where it creates “hyper individualist” environmental society.

They may also end up forgetting their society culture and thus they are mostly involved in activities related to environmental degradation contrary to their culture. For instance, every community has put up some protective measures on environment that each member of the society has to adhere to and abide by.

Urban growth has led to degradation of wetlands and forests. When the people migrate to urban centers the environmental resources are at  high risk of extinction, such resource are very useful to the current and future generation to come .Urbanization is associated with several effects on environment such pollution and soil erosion .Destruction  of wetlands like forest and water catchment areas which are source of major rivers and habitants of wildlife .This according to some evidence has resulted to depletion of natural resources and production of waste. Commercial effluent from urban areas is dumped in rivers and thus causing stress on water resources and may lead to death of water animals and fish. Decentralization of infrastructure has resulted to culture degradation (Bruggemann et al 2010). We have forgotten that Poverty in the community is a main cause and effect of environmental degradation. This is because the poor depend on natural resources more than the rich. The less fortune in the society are involved in activities related to environmental degradation such as illegal logging, poaching which are harmful to environment. We have forgotten the idea that individuals can deplete the available resources at higher rate than they regenerate. This is because it is hard for them to gain access to other resources to meet their basic needs.

The agricultural development is a direct impact on the environmental degradation .Right from the farming activities which results to erosion (Bruggemann et al 2010). Loss of nutrients and also land salinization .Green revolution is resulting to over exploitation of land resource and water use of fertilizers and chemicals such as pesticides are contributors of environmental degradation. The issue of shift cultivation is a threat to the forest resource .We have leaching of farm chemicals and fertilizers these leads to contamination of underground water .We are witnessing intensive agriculture and irrigation everywhere in this world .They contribute to salinization alkalization and water logging. These are causes of environmental degradation. Agricultural activities environmental friendly, such as using organic manures instead of fertilizers.

The articles are very sensitive and I congratulate you for spreading the news of environmental protection. I wish you all the best as you continue motivating people around the world to conserve the environment they are living .I imagine one day when there will be no more issues or threats to the environment .There will be no droughts, floods, deadly diseases and infections resulting from climate change .The cases of illegal logging in our wetlands as well as air, soil and water pollution will not be there anymore. If every person in the world including I and you advocates and enlighten people about this issue of environmental degradation. The strategies to improve environmental conservation and policies governing environment should be applied in all institutions and by all people on the planet earth .This will result to environmental sustainability, conservation, and protection of our natural resources. If natural resources are used sustainably, the issues of environmental degradation will be minimal in the world.
