Response to Discussion 2
One of the most challenging issues in Robert Samuelson’s article is that we are slowly losing the ability to imagine and control the future. Coronavirus disease is bringing the whole world to a stand-still and almost all economies down. Flu-related conditions have been there before, but their severity is not as that of Coronavirus. The fact that there a flu-like disease has existed before several times should have prompted researchers to prepare for a flue like a pandemic. The virus found everyone unprepared. No country has produced a vaccine at the moment, and the disease is killing thousands every day across the world. Indeed, we are slowly losing the ability to control the future. If this were not true, we would have conquered the disease before it infected 100 people.
Those providing warning may not exaggerate their opinions based on the current condition. This is because they have never experienced what they experienced during their time, and they have to make what they have seen a big issue. Today, Coronavirus might cause a more significant impact as opposed to what happened in 2009. Since we have not seen anything more substantial than this, it will remain in our minds for quite some time, and we will be talking of it as the most significant cause of depression in 2020. Most warnings are ignored because we think that we are prepared for anything. The worst thing that could happen to the world is war. Different nations today have shown their prowess in the manufacture of sophisticated weapons. No one ever thought that a virus could wipe out the world today. Different countries think that they have the best health care systems and equipment. Today, all nations have recognized Coronavirus and its impact on the economy. Scientists are now running up and down, trying to look for a vaccine or possible treatment. It will take time for a vaccine to be developed, but there is hope for one to be found. No one knows what the next killer will be because we all think that Coronavirus is the worst thing that has happened to humankind.
