Review of the Movie Black Panther.
In the year 2018, the movie Black Panther premiered in theatres worldwide. Based on Stan Lee’s and Jack Kirby’s comic book about a superhero by the same name. The film director was Ryan Coogler, who had been part of the writing team with Joe Robert Cole. Acclaimed was the movie Black Panther for its all-black cast, which included: the lead Chadwick Boseman as T’challa (Black Panther), Michael.B.Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letita Wright, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett. The movie is science fiction set up in the land of Wakanda, where T’Challa must take up his late father’s throne (T’Chaka) and protect his community, especially when Killmonger threatens to begin a revolution. The film won several awards, nominations and broke several records. However, it was overly hyped, and most of the scenes in it are just cliché, and the audience can as well predict what is going to happen before it even happens. Praise was to the movie for its originality in the cast to embrace diversity, well-thought soundtrack, props, and settings to reflect on the culture that needed portraying.
To begin with, the major selling point of this movie was it was the first Marvel film with all Black lead cast in which they delivered. The actors and actresses featured gave their best foot forward. The theme is essential at a time where African Americans are fighting for equal rights for the voice to be heard and seen and not only in the negative light. The director also included mighty female warriors and one of the protectors’ of the land. The cast also adapted an African accent in the movie, which is essential in portraying the real Wakanda roots. The country has adopted an isolation policy, letting the outside think it’s an impoverished nation when they are rich with a mineral known as vibranium instrumental in the development of technology. They are a self-sustaining economy that can help the world if they were willing to.
Second, the soundtrack was put together by composer Ludwig Goransson who invested in ensuring that it reflected the central theme of the movie: cultural diversity. He travels to Africa for research for the film in Senegal. Goransson invoked the use of the talking drum, tambin, Fula flute and horns to use. The instruments are essential in scenes of the movie, such as coronation and when the Villain Killmonger challenges Black Panther over the throne. The film’s soundtrack is different from the norm for most Marvel productions.
The film has won major awards and nominations after its premiere. Black Panther became the highest-grossing film by a black director and the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, earning over a billion dollars(McClintock 2018). It is the first superhero movie to receive the best picture nomination. The film also received numerous awards and nominations, including best picture, best costume design, best original score in the 91st Academy Awards. The black Panther made History by having its costume designer Ruth Carter become the first African American to win in the category. The costumes brought to life a fictional country Wakanda to one with rich real History held dear by the people.
In conclusion, the movie Black Panther is reflecting the American Revolution towards a more inclusive culture appreciation for diversity and a black hero who saves the day. It is a timeless movie that will transcend to generations to come.
