Rhetorical Analysis Essay Test
Assessed English Learning Targets:
- Students can produce clear and effective writing to purposefully analyze literature.
Your Task: Create a 3-5 page well developed essay that analyzes the rhetorical choices that an author has made in one of the five short stories we have evaluated during the course of the unit. Your essay should include the following:
- A well developed introduction with a very clear thesis
- A well developed body that analyzes 3-5 rhetorical strategies that the author is using throughout the text. Be sure to use quotes and passages from the text to show your understanding of the rhetorical strategy. Be sure to give as many examples of each form of rhetoric as you can. The more examples, the deeper the analysis. Give at least 2 examples of each form of rhetoric in each paragraph. Remember to use the claim, evidence, analysis model. - A well developed conclusion that restates the thesis, wraps up and leaves the reader thinking about the overall theme of the story.
- You may use your short story notes and a copy of the story as well to assist in the process of writing this essay.

Helpful Tips for the Essay:
- Be sure to be as detailed as possible. It will be in the details that I can see your understanding of the text and of rhetoric.
- Be sure to write professionally: DO NOT USE I, ME, MY, YOU, OR YOUR.
- Be sure to proofread.
- You do not need to use citations in the essay because you are only writing about one author and you will have introduced them in the introduction.
