Role of the Department of Homeland Security
The terrorism incident is about blockading of the Boston Marathon Bombers that was on April 15, 2003., The terrorism act was done during the Boston Marathon event, which entailed a set up where explosives such as pressure cooker bombs and nails were strategically placed and placed on specific places. The incident is of interest to me as it entailed a well organized plan where the weapons were well-timed with accordance to a race that was taking place.
Emergency Management was effective enough in ensuring that they dealt with the issue before it exploded, and they were assertive enough. During the act, JFK Presidential Library exploded,. The emergency team was able to take quick action and determined that the case was not related to the bombing. The terrorist means of escape was blocked through the creation of a perimeter to intercept the suspects and get to interview witnesses.
Terrorism has become a critical threat to the world in the modern world, and there is a need to ensure that terrorist is able to curb the situation before things erupt. The emergency department should ensure that they have enough intelligence both on security and the immigration department so as to get to pinpoint terrorist who gets to the country as immigrants while others become citizens over time and end up being a threat to the national security.
Role of the Department of Homeland Security
The leading roles of the department is to ensure that they are able to make proper coordination during occurrences of aunex[pected events such as hurricanes, terrorism and other emergencies. They are also involved in gathering and sharing of intelligence information which can be used to ensure that citizens are safe or lower the risk posed. DHS also facilitate in the preparation and mitigation of damages that are raised by security threats. During the incident
Department of Homeland Security was involved in blocking all the potential escapes, highways were under surveillance, vetting of flights and curtailing means of escape via sea since the terrorist was believed to be within.
Department of Homeland Security collects information from different sources such as the use of social coast guards and cybersecurity and infrastructure security Agency. The use of Coast guards entails ensuring that proper surveillance is done on the coast to ensure any movements in and out of the coast is well checked. During the incident, any ferrying of people using vessels was highly monitored by the DHS to ensure security was paramount. Infrastructure Security entails monitoring of
areas deemed to be a potential target, the commercial and passenger traffic was highly monitored, such as areas with commercial and human traffic during and after the manhunt.
After the incidence, DHS had the responsibility of communicating to the governments, stakeholders and the general public on what transpired on that day. DHS communicated through a report and Television News interview. On the report, DHS gave lessons learnt from the attack and emphasized more on the importance of having partnerships, and why all stakeholders should try and have effective communication. In the television News Interview, DHS gave a report to the community and the government on ensuring that efforts are made to boost the anti-radicalization efforts since the suspect was initially a Pakistan citizen.
