It is a common fact that most countries across the world are indeed experiencing a shortage of nurses and this has therefore become an overwhelming problem across the world. This has made new graduate nurses in the contemporary complex healthcare environments to become tasked with numerous responsibilities and roles. The aim of this paper is to describe the various roles expected to be done by the new graduate nurses in the modern complex healthcare environment and identify the relevant skills, attitudes, and knowledge that nursing leaders desire in the new nurses (Armstrong, McCurry & Dluhy, 2017). The paper will also present a discussion regarding a personal communication with a nurse leader regarding the essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills that lack in new graduate nurses based on their experiences and present some of the challenges or issues that they face upon entering the workforce. Some of the strategies or methods that can be used in assistance of the new graduate nurses as they transit in the nursing profession will also be given in the paper.

Among some of the roles such new graduate nurses are expected to execute include but are not limited to helping in the coordination of care from the multiple providers as well as the effective management of caseloads for the patients that have intense or immense healthcare needs. In addition to that, the new graduate nurses are also expected to help patients under their custodies to effectively transition in their respective health facilities into their own homes or other viable settings (Conejo & Loyd, 2018). The new graduate nurses are also expected to work as the health coaches in helping the prevention of diseases and promotion of wellness in their respective work settings.

There are a range of skills, attitudes, and knowledge that nursing leaders’ desire in the new graduate nurses working under them and chief include among them strong leadership skills that will ultimately help such nurses to make significant contributions to both the quality of healthcare and safety. The new nurses also of to have greater influences in whatever they do especially in their critical or respective areas in provision of patient care and safety. In addition, it was important that the new graduate skills should have effective and efficient communication skills, behave in dignity and privacy, and have good knowledge in the management of medication administration among patients (Bakon et al. 2018). The new graduate nurses should also be caring to both themselves and others, portray empathy, attention to details, and posses good problem solving skills. The new graduate nurses also opt to depict respect self-awareness, and have desire to keep on learning.

Based on a personal communication with a nurse leader, it was ascertained that there was a range of skills, attitudes, and knowledge that the new graduate nurses lacked upon entering the profession and these included but were not limited to: perceived perceptions regarding their own abilities, poor interaction among their peers, and the inability to apply classroom knowledge to the actual practical environment. It was also noted that the new graduate nurses had difficulties in time management and had to be constantly reminded on their duties.

According to one of personal communication with a nurse leader, it was ascertained that some of the issues and challenges which were faced by new nurses upon their entering the workforce included but were not limited to an increase in the number of patients that had multiple co morbidities and complex conditions that had been placed under their care and also the lack of easy access to highly experienced coaches and mentors (Edward, Ousey, Playle & Giandinoto, 2017). The new nurses also noted that generational diversity at their respective places of work coupled with performance anxieties were some of the issues that faced them upon entering the workforce.

Some of the strategies or methods that can be used in assisting the new nurses to transition into ther respective nursing professions are through giving them support and preceptor programs. It was ascertained that support was indeed a crucial factor because it helps in ensuring that nurses have smooth transition period. In addition to that, preceptor programs are the best for the new nurses because they helped in ensuring that more effective outcomes were achieved during the initial six months of registered nurses’ transition (Kaldal, Kristiansen & Uhrenfeldt, 2018). This is also quite important because it helps in the reduction of the culture shock as well as helping new nurses effectively integrate as well as link different theories with practice.

It is prudent to note that preceptor programs are quite important in supporting the new graduate nurses because it allows them to closely work with other experiences nurses in their work environments so as to not only enhance on their confidence but also on their competencies and therefore ultimately helping them gain more appropriate autonomies especially in their patient care process (Owens, 2019). For example, it was noted by that mentors or preceptors played a vital role in helping guide the new graduate nurses in their respective processes of clinical learning and that they also helped them achieve their personal and professional growths.

Based on the above information, it is quite evident and apparent the new graduate nurses play a vital role in the modern day and complex healthcare environment. However, it was important that the nurse leaders help the new nurses to effectively transition in their profession through provision of relevant support and mentorship. It is the responsibility of all medical personnel and relevant stakeholders to ensure that they effectively address the challenges or issues facing the new graduate nurses so that they effectively fit into the system.
