“Runaway World,”
The concept of a “runaway world,” in which technological, economic, social and political forces unleashed by globalization have made life more uncertain, can be applied to life as it is lived in today’s families. A related theme, mentioned in lectures, is that families confront new “risks” or assess risk differently than did families in the past. There are four (4) parts to the essay question: please respond to all four points: 1. In general, how has globalization affected the lives of individuals and families, compared to the way people and families lived in the past? 2. Describe in some detail how family behavior or decision-making in ″wealthier countries″ may be affected by globalization and the risks of a “runaway world.” [unique_solution]3. Define what is meant by ″McDonaldization″ by identifying its core principles. Give at least one example or illustration of each of these principles. How has McDonaldization created conditions that can complicate family life for working parents in the Global North? 4.Discuss how families can play a central role in managing a particular type of ritual that marks a young person′s ″coming of age.″ How does the purpose of these rituals differ by the young person′s gender? Give examples that illustrate these differences.
