SAVANNAH STATE UNIVERSITY HIRES JAMES NEWCASTLE AS THE NEW CHANCELLOR OF THE INSTITUTION
The Savannah State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. James Newcastle as the new chancellor of the institution, effective from September 1st. The appointment comes after the resignation of the former school president on June 30th due to family obligations. The former president will move back to Missouri, where he will take up his new role as a provost at the University of Missouri. For the last three months, a committee of twelve members has aggressively searched for the best candidate, interviewing over 200 of them, and have all come to a consensus that Mr. Newcastle is the best fit for the position.
Mr. Newcastle is 49 years old, married to Beth, with whom they have two sons, Bill (25), and Bob (21). He currently lives in Fargo, North Dakota, but is planning to move to Savannah in July to familiarize himself with the city and the institution before he takes up his role in September.
Mr. Newcastle is a University of Georgia journalism graduate. He also has a Stanford University psychology master’s degree and a University of Texas Ph.D. in communication. For the last four years, he has served as a provost at West Northeastern University in Fargo, North Dakota. He also served as a chairman in the communications department at Indiana State University and as a faculty member for twelve years in the same institution. He had roles as president and vice-president in the National Communications Association, another in regional communication association boards of directors and others in over twelve states. Mr. Newcastle is very charitable. Many people know of the fundraising efforts he has made over the years. His main contribution to charity includes the formation of a $16.8 fund in the journalism department of West Northeastern University. The endowment is an exceptional one, as it offered the whole country’s news and students worked as the staff, under the supervision of their professors.
Burt Sosa, professor of English and search chair said, “We had so many great candidates, but Jim really came to the top of the pile. He had so many great ideas as to how to help us go forward as a university, and yet he respected who we are. He also saw greatness in our faculty and offered ways to get our professors and instructors additional resources. He saw our students and offered ways to give them more education for fewer dollars. I couldn’t have asked for more in a president.”
“I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Newcastle when he visited campus, and he struck me as a bright, energetic leader. In these times of budget tightening, his fundraising skills will be a definite asset. However, the best thing he has going for him, in my opinion, is that he’s a people person,’’ said Ella Sdeli, senior political science major and head of student government.
The president of his former work station, Paul Flipperton, had a lot to say about Mr. Newcastle. He was sad to lose him as West Northeastern University’s provost. In his remarks, he said, “I’m really sad that we will be losing Dr. Newcastle as our provost, not just because of how much he did for West Northeastern University, but also because of how great he is as a person. His legacy on this campus will not be forgotten any time soon, thanks in large part to his fundraising effort for the journalism endowment. I wish him well as president, and I hope he does extremely well for the students and faculty there.”
