Background: We have discussed/will discuss two seriously different types of letters: ones you may need to send in an academic setting and the inspiring, compelling work of Martin Luther King Jr. in Letter from Birmingham Jail. You will now create your own letters. Task: Select an example of marginalization that you have encountered, witnessed, or experienced personally in a community to which you belong. Determine who would be responsible for ending the marginalization in the community. Craft your letter to this audience explaining why the marginalization must end and how to end it. You absolutely must choose a specific and defined audience and gear the material toward this person or group of people. Format: The letter must follow an academic format containing an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You should use formal salutations and closings for the letter. Introduction: The introduction must provide context to the issue and contain a thesis statement identifying the main points. Body Paragraphs: Each section of the letter should articulate a separate main point. You will need to create claims and support those claims with evidence from your sources. Begin each section with a topic sentence; use transitional words and phrases to move between ideas. Conclusion: Do not simply restate your thesis. Instead, emphasize the most prominent points, the need for action, and the next steps. Requirements: In addition to fulfilling the task requirements, this paper must be typed, double- spaced, and in Times New Roman font size 12. Maintain 1” margins throughout the paper. You must use APA style, including in-text citations, a References page, and a cover page, and you must incorporate two reputable outside (meaning not material we have discussed/read in/for class) sources. The sources must come from the Adelphi University Library Databases. Do not wait until the last minute to conduct research and then state that no research exists. We have discussed the campus resources to assist with this issue; make use of them—and ask me in advance if struggles with research persist. Points are deducted if the requirements, including using sources from the Adelphi University Library Databases, are not met. The paper must be a minimum of three full pages. You may write in both third and first person for this assignment. Do not excessively use first person. Second person is even a possibility here, but consider how even a moderate use of second person is often accusatory and repetitive.
