Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to understand and manage one’s emotions in positive ways to communicate, listen, relieve stress, and empathize with others effectively. Through EI, an individual can build stronger relationships, succeed at the workplace, and achieve one’s personal and career goals (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). Besides, EI can assist a leader in connecting with his or her feelings and thus making a decision that matters most to him or her (Ralston et al., 2018). When a leader loses his or her temper at the workplace, it can create an environment of fear which may affect the team’s productivity.

One of the approaches I will incorporate to develop increased levels of emotional intelligence is self-management. Through self-management, I will be able to control both my feelings and behaviors to manage emotions in ways such as taking the initiative, following through the commitment, and adapting to the circumstances (Vazquez, 2016). Also, I will try to cultivate pleasant feelings, such as happiness, appreciation, and enthusiasm. On the other hand, I will ensure that I diminish the longevity of unpleasant emotions such as sadness, guilt, anxiety, and frustration (Ralston et al., 2018). The regulation of my behavior, as stated through the processes above, will assist me to remain calm in periods of anxiety and frustrations at the workplace so that I can make proper decisions.

The other approach I will incorporate in my self-development plan is cultivating social awareness. Social awareness is the ability of an individual to empathize with people from diverse backgrounds and ethnicity (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). This exercise will entail understanding the social and ethical norms of different communities through both interaction and education (Vazquez, 2016). This approach will enable me to understand the emotions, concerns, and needs of other people and thus become socially comfortable through recognition of power dynamics among groups.

Tools, Steps and Expected Outcomes of the Emotional Development Process

One of the tools I will incorporate to assess my progress in managing emotions is the Mitra App, which is used to track individual emotions and values in a given timeframe (Vazquez, 2016). I will be able to record the emotions and values and rate them daily, which will enable me to track my feelings and reflect on the underlying circumstances (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). The expected outcome of this emotional development process is an individual who has high emotional intelligence and can successfully execute duties and maintain healthy relationships.

Ethical Analysis

Ethics refer to moral principles that guide an individual behaviour. Having high ethical standards is significant to ensure and maintain public trust in each segment of our lives (Ralston et al., 2018). More so, upholding ethical standards at the workplace is associated with virtues that build transparency, integrity, and teamwork at the organization (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). However, it is only through a leader with a strong and ethical culture that he or she will be able to influence, foster and engage ethical standards at the workplace, which is critical when faced with making critical decisions.

One of the ethical principles I uphold is truthfulness and confidentiality. A moral leader deserves to be both straightforward and candid in providing the right information when it is necessary (Vazquez, 2016). Being truthful has enabled me to establish better relationships with my employees, clients, and other vital stakeholders (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). I have learned that the economy works because people choose to trust and support each other in business. As such, for every interaction I encounter, I try my best to build better relationships and nurture trust.

The other ethical principle I uphold is fairness. Fairness refers to the process of treating people with a performance standard that is consistent with one’s commitments. I have always strived to ensure that my customers receive a fair value of their money (Akila and Thangavel, 2011). Also, I ensure that I provide a non-discriminatory work environment where my employees have equal opportunities in terms of work conditions and benefits (Vazquez, 2016). Fairness is my core principle since I would also expect to be treated fairly in return by the community members and business partners.

The other ethical principle I uphold is respect. Respect refers to being considerate of the needs and feelings of other people involved in your business. I have always strived to ensure that I acknowledge and meet the needs of my customers, employees, and partner without them reminding me (Vazquez, 2016). Also, I have learned that illustrating sincere interest and concern in relationships is essential in creating a respectful atmosphere that tends to serve you when in need.

How to Develop a Great Sense of Ethics

I keep myself sensitized on ethical issues by learning and listening more. Moral values arise from society, and thus, it is my responsibility to familiarise myself with the values and customs of the different communities I find myself in (Vazquez, 2016). More so, I am open to criticism, and this will be an essential tool to assess my progress and rectify accordingly.
