Sentence Variety
Sentence variety involves changing the length and structure of sentences to emphasize key ideas and shun monotony. Sentence variety helps writers to highlight key ideas, enhances the reading of the writer’s work and helps to avoid monotony in writing.
Sentence variety allows writers to put more emphasis on the main ideas of their articles, and this is achieved through the use of different types of sentences, which includes simple, complex and compound sentences. Also, sentence variety enhances the reading the author’s work because the author has already emphasized on the main ideas, and hence readers are most likely to understand the scholarly work easily. Additionally, sentence variety helps to avoid monotony in sentences since the writers can limit cases of repetition in their scholarly work. Scholarly work with few cases of monotony becomes interesting to the readers. Sentence variety helps readers to achieve diversification of ideas since they can compare different articles from different authors and then settle for the best concepts.
In my rough draft, I used both simple, complex and compound sentences. An example of a simple sentence was “Gonzalez (2018) further opines that countries like Japan and Australia have well-grounded gun policies.” A simple sentence was the most effective because it provided examples of countries that had put in place sound gun policies. The sentence before was a simple sentence while the sentence after was a compound sentence. The simple sentence before provided a suggestion on developing comprehensive control policies that did not conflict with the rights of the Americans. An example of a complex sentence in my rough draft was “the two authors see no reason as to why each concerned citizen does not possess a gun due to the ever-deteriorating safety as a result of lessened gun regulations.” A complex sentence was the most effective because it provided a connection of different information using different clauses. The sentence before was a compound sentence while that after was a simple sentence, and both sentences helped the author to achieve sentence variety by complimenting the author’s quest of permitting Americans to own guns.
An example of a compound sentence in my draft was “the inefficacy of gun laws has been a significant contributor to the increased instances of unnecessary mass shootings, and it now the time for citizens to persistently fight for their rights.” A compound sentence was the most appropriate since it allowed the author to present two independent ideas using the coordinating conjunction ‘and.’ The sentence before was a complex sentence while that after was a simple sentence. Proper punctuation was achieved while writing the sentences. In the compound sentence, a comma and coordinating conjunction were used to separate the two independent ideas.
