Service-learning
Service-learning is one of the most preferred educational systems that incorporate learning objectives into community service aimed at achieving student’s goals as well as meeting the needs of the society. For my case, my community service is immigrants detained awaiting deportation. A lot of critical and creative thinking is needed to come up with solutions on the well- being of the detainees. Their need range from the standard basic needs, problem-solving skills, capacity building as well as enhancement of coping techniques.
One of the fundamental need for such people is the promotion of their well- being. It is worth noting that most immigrants have no facilities or mechanisms to deal with stress which negatively impact on their well- being. The stress is associated with their situation as well as fears of their fate. ı will provide a session where i can freely interact and talk with them. Sharing their grievances out is one of the processes of dealing with their stress. Additionally, ı will encourage them to talk to each other in the camp since it diverts their thought as they interact with each other. I will also work in cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure that their fundamental rights are adhered to promote their well- being.
On my assessment, ıt is clear that the immigrants’ basic needs are not well provided. The situation may be associated to their large numbers visa vie the resources available interms of materials and human labour. To sprovide a solution, ı have to link with systems that provide resources, services and opportunities to people in need. I know of some non- governmental organization, governmental organizations and other related agencies that could be of great help. I will invite them to come and assess the situation in the camp and write them proposals to persuade them to donate resources for the immigrants. The resources will be used to better the lives of these people by improving the their lives in terms of providing their basic needs. Additionally, since the number of staff compared to the immigrant is not enough, ı will convince my fellow students to offer services in the camp to ensure that they recieve better service delivery.
It is apperent that individusls in such camps have problems perculiar to the situations in camps. These problems range from stress, coping problems and capacity building. As a service-learning community student, ı have a responsibility of helping these immigrants in enhancing skills in problem- solving techniques, cop,ng and development of their capabilities. To enhance problem solving skills, ı will help them to focus more on the possible solutions to their problems as oppossed to the problems they face. Additionally, ı will work hand in hand with them to provide as many possible solutions to their problems, when solutions orginate from them, it will be easier to to incorporate them within. Lastly ı will instill the sprit of optmism in the then with a more literal mindset. In enhancing coping skills, we will work together to identify their many worries concerning deportation and their situation and using other techniques that other migrants have used, we will find the best was of coping. On enhancing capabilities, we will focus more on their talents and hobbies where ı will assign roles accordingly. Additionally, we may offer training to equip them with necessary skills.
I believe that if ım able to put these strategies in place, it will play a big role in incorporating learning objectives into community service as well as meeting the needs of the society
