Should a leader adapt his or her style to each follower or a workgroup as a whole?
A leader should accommodate his or her style to each member, contrary to a workgroup as a whole. This will make the leader equally supportive, directive, and motivational to every subordinate in the group.
Each follower style of leadership is more interactive compared to the whole workgroup style. The followers can interact freely with their leaders in individual follower style and be able to ask for any personal or group clarification if need be. In this style of leadership, leaders can measure the capacity of each individual. Leaders can know the skills and abilities portrayed by each follower in the group as they interact in their workplaces. In case any member has a low level of abilities or skills, the leader will take his or her responsibility to provide additional training or coaching to improve the member’s performance.
When a leader adapts his or her style to each follower, the subordinates are free to share their personal needs and challenges, and the leaders can employ their leadership techniques to guide them on how to overcome the challenges by helping them to get solutions. Also, if the leader adapts this style, the followers who may need clear directives can easily be guided as the leader is easily approachable. In this style of leadership, the leader can access the working place of his followers; hence the leader will receive any challenges each member is facing in his or her working area that may affect subordinate’s performance. In case of challenges, the leader will provide solutions for the challenges to ensure the challenges are not the barrier to the follower’s performance.
