The main idea from week 2 was the significance of the social and emotional learning and increasing the capacity of learning of the first-year doctorate students. From the article, the primary importance of studying social-emotional is to learn the social-economic learning skills that make the students care relationships better. The major disciplines of social, emotional learning include self-management, self-awareness, relationship skills, social awareness, and responsible decision making (“Developing Care and Socio-Emotional Learning in First-Year Doctoral Students: Building Capacity for Success,” 2018). However, other competencies such as the ability to embrace the perspectives of others, understanding one’s emotions, showing respect, and expressing empathy also contribute to social and emotional learning and building relationships. Additionally, the article states that it is essential for doctorate students to work together as a team on their research projects and courses. The students should have the ability to communicate and engage effectively with team members in actions that are supported by the social, emotional skills to boost their relationship. Self-motivation is a crucial element in social, emotional learning whereby students are required to analyze problems, recognize their strengths, set goals based on self-perceptions, and propose solutions to overcome the barriers.
The article states that social support is a significant element to the success of graduate students. It is evident in the form of student relationships with peers and family and those who are concerned about the success of the student. The social, emotional learning helps students transition to Higher Education, enhance the students’ experience, and reduce the rates of withdrawal. In the adult learning, emotions of effective learning are essential since the adults bring past lived experiences to the classroom (“Developing Care and Socio-Emotional Learning in First-Year Doctoral Students: Building Capacity for Success,” 2018). Emotion is both expressive and cognitive. The life experiences assist the students in building effective relationships and contributing to their social awareness, which, in return, influence their academic performance. Additionally, this model of learning is present in distance learning, whereby online instruction builds a sense of community and enhance the student’s interactions.
