Developing countries lag behind when it comes to globalisation as their presence in the international market is not felt as the presence of firms from developed countries. SMEs act as a source of employment, and provide competition for small companies. The larger and more developed firms and markets are still dependent on SMEs to ensure growth and success. The current local markets do not have an option but to set up businesses and invest in the foreign market lest they become quickly replaced by foreign markets which have come to invest at home.
