Smooth Wheeled Roller (Double Drum Roller)
A Smooth wheeled roller utilizes static pressure, vibration, and impact to compact materials such as gravel, sand, asphalt, and rocks. Many road construction projects use smooth rollers, also called vibratory rollers, to create flat and smooth surfaces. There are two types of smooth wheeled rollers, both of which almost serve the same purpose but of different magnitudes. There is the single drum roller and the double drum roller. In particular, this paper is going to discuss on the double drum roller.
The machine compacts the raised spots down until the soil level is smooth. The tool applies a mechanism where a combination of the wheels with a motor grader gets a leveled surface. At this stage, though not regularly, a pneumatic tyre roller would be used. Such rollers are featured in two rows; back and front. The latter are pneumatic rows of tyres. These tyres overlap to offer flexibility. Eventually, the flexibility created provides a kneading action. The sealing of the surface is achieved through some vertical movement of the wheels. The process enables the rollers to operate entirely on uneven ground. After attaining a flat road surface, the smooth double drum compactor stops working on the road surface.
At times, the smooth double drum roller operates in combination with a grader and a water truck to attain a flat compacted surface. The water truck avails water to offer the right moisture content for optimum compaction. Immediately the road base is well compacted, the smooth double drum compactor is no longer of any use on the road surface.
