Sociology and Crimes
Across all cultures, men tend to commit more crimes than women accounting for a higher percentage of those charged with violent crimes. However, some of the recent reports and news show a changing trend in criminal acts, with more women getting involved with violent crimes closing the gender gap (Chun). The study seeks to determine the contributors to the closing gender gaps in violent crimes through sociology aspects and how they impact the perception of the two sex’s committing violent crimes.
The Missouri shouting, as reported by the Fox News, resulted in the deaths of a police officer and three other people after they got shot by a male shooter who ended up shooting himself. The shooting was carried out by a 31-year-old man from Springfield identified as Joaquin Roman at the Km & Go having fired the other three locations from the south of the city (Fox news). Another violent incident involves a woman aged 41 years called Sarah Boone, who caused the death of her boyfriend. As the Independent reports, the woman is alleged to have zipped her boyfriend in a suitcase leaving him to die. The police charged her with second-degree murder since the video used as evidence shows that she is not as innocent as she claims since she is heard telling her boyfriend before death that it was on him and that how she felt when he cheated on her or choked her (Giordano). The crime seems to be committed out of the feeling of the need to take action due to anger or frustrations though the Missouri shooting reason is not known.
However, through the two media reporting of the incidences, it shows how males are profiled as criminals while women are portrayed as good people though they have committed the crime. The male is outrightly called a gunman while the female is reported as allegedly have killed her boyfriend. One should, however, acknowledge the involvement of the male and females in crimes resulting in death and not perceive the other sex more sympathetically. Race instead does not determine crime a person commits, and the notion of one race being associated with crimes is wrong since the incidences portray that all races are capable of engaging crimes since it is an individual thing regardless of color. Though the socioeconomic status of the two is not reported, the personal belongings they are said to have shown that they were well off in the society and not poor.. Contrary to the mythical belief of associating poverty with criminal activities, crimes know no boundary in terms of social status. All people in all levels of socioeconomic levels are capable of committing criminal acts. Also, age has no determination on illegal activities since both old and young commit crimes. However, the relative older people do not commit crimes compared to the youths, which the two fall into with the female being 46 years of age.
Also, as proved in headlines of the two crimes, beauty has an impact on the perception of the crimes. The male crime caption is more authoritative and has a level of certainty in its reporting of the man as the perpetrator of the killings. However, the female reporting of the crime has no certainty and seems to doubt whether she committed the crime intentionally, or it was as she claims it was an accident, and they were only playing hide game. Though the media report videos that incriminate her beyond doubt, the caption of the news does not ascertain her involvement and haves sympathy with the woman, this shows that women are generally perceived as if they cannot commit crimes. At the same time, it is believed that it is in men’s ability to commit violent crimes.
Consequently, in search of further investigation on how the sociology demographics impact the perception of criminal activity involving males and females, I carried out interviews on five people seeking to get their opinions. Though they all agreed on the view of perpetrators on almost all sociology demographics, one area that had different ideas was that of gender and beauty. Both females and males whom I involved in the interview could not agree on the issue of a woman committing a crime. They believed that a woman to commit crime, man, or anything extreme to provoke her must have happened to either break her heart until she can’t hold onto the pressure within her or out of anger associated with drinking under stress. The different view on men was that men perpetrators of crime are capable of doing so without any reason just out of their ego. Many also felt that beauty was used as a reason to hide and cry foul in the event a woman committed a crime that attracted sympathy. Moreover, among men, the rough-faced become accused or associated with criminal acts even when they have not committed the crimes.
