Special education
Special education laws are created with a response to meet the educational needs of children with disabilities adequately. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which was a public law created to ensure that the educational needs of the disabled children were responded to adequately and never overlooked. The main purpose of this law was to ensure that all children with disabilities receive free and appropriate public education.
To trigger the protections of IDEA, a child is to have a disability that results in to need for special education and other related special needs. The identification of children with special needs is made by the teacher, school personnel, or a patent during an evaluation. The evaluation that the child is subjected to must include areas like vision, hearing physical examination, psychiatrist and psychological evaluation. The evaluation will, in the end, help determine whether the child requires special treatment and the provision of special education.
The parent must have the approval of the evaluation, and in case he or she is not okay with it, then a request for Independent Education Evaluation is acceptable. If the parent agrees, and the evaluation shows that the child is eligible, the individualized education program meeting is scheduled. The program has the guide on the special education and the related services that a child with special needs should be given. During the IEP, there are professionals who are allowed to participate, and they include, education teacher, a school representative, a special education teacher, and a person capable of interpreting the evaluation results. The child involved in this case may also participate in the IEP meeting.
The IEP meeting will help determine the child’s present academic levels and functional performance. This will, in the end, help determine the special education and related services needed, the supplementary needs and services that the child will need and the modifications required for their accommodation.
IDEA requires that a child with a disability will receive special education and in a favourable environment and away from the rest of the students. The act requires that the children with disabilities be educated in their home school unless the IEP states otherwise. This will take a given amount of time, and the appropriate time should be taken.
The individualized education program states that a school is not allowed to place all the children with disabilities in a separate classroom as the need s of each student vary and thus, each student’s needs must be assessed and evaluated so that the needs of the students be implemented.
For a child with special needs to benefit from the special education and related services, then there is a need for modification and accommodation.by changing the testing criteria through which a child is tested, for example, the use of oral exams instead of writing one. Accommodation will include things like communication devices, specialized computer software, sign language interpreters and the braille’s that will help in the learning progress of a child with a disability.
Having a comfortable and enabling environment for children with disabilities is a key thing, and that has been looked into in recent years. The law has felt the need to have their needs addressed and looked into as they will require special treatment. Children with disabilities have also turned into important people in world history, and there is thus a need to nurture their dreams.
