Status of women

The society is comprised of two major pillars of human life, which include women and men. It is believed that both men and women have equal responsibility in the making of society, and therefore, they supplement one another. Initially, women from different cultures all over the globe are exploited in various ways (Singh 59). As women had a strong will to enhance the level of their status in society, they were able to make for themselves a niche in the culture of today. The following are the views of the status of women as a cultural aspect in society and the elements that have enabled them to enhance their status.

Traditionally, women were exploited in various ways in society, including criticism, lack of freedom, had no chance to be equivalent to men and even almost deprived of their rights as human beings. It almost took their entire effort and courage to set an impression of “the power of a woman” and develop a significant niche in society. Traditionally, in some cultures, the women’s view in the community was to remain at home, do the home activities, and help on the farm (Badinter 17). However, this view started to change gradually in recent centuries.  Educator and legislatures made a step ahead through widening the opportunities of women in education (Singh 60). The effects of the education of women on development constitute an important area of research within global growth. Some of these effects are about social and economic development.

Women were traditionally taken to be powerless and were not given any opportunity to make decisions.  Men seemed to remain in power in all areas including at home, workplaces and generally everywhere man dominated. It was believed that women are possessions of their husbands, and for that reason, they were expected to adhere to what their husbands tell them (Singh 62). They were assumed to be weak and incapable of taking part in politics. Today, women have been involved in politics and have vied for positions in government and other sectors (Toh 607). Women need to be given a chance to compete as every country deserves to have the best in leadership failure to which the society will be depriving themselves a great deal of talent. For instance, there are countries whose presidents are women, such as Liberia in Africa. When you take a walk in various offices, you find women on their seats delivering services in multiple departments. (Toh 611).  In committees, women are given equal opportunities in giving out their views and involved in decision-making, and thus sweeps away the idea that women are weak and cannot be included in decision making.

In the current world, women are seen to get involved in employment and economic fields. The state of the woman of staying home was broken, and women have managed to walk out of the four-walled household to get employed just like men (Badinter 17). In some cultures, women are not allowed to work or seek jobs as it is believed to be against their beliefs (Whyte 6). They were assigned other duties in their homes and were not allowed to do hard tasks. However, today, you encounter women heading to their respective area of work. It’s not a surprising thing that they are even giving the men a stiff competition in service delivery and the production sector.

Discrimination against women has been a burning issue to them as it resulted in a deprivation of their rights. Discrimination has been termed as any difference, elimination or limitation made based on gender with effect or aim to impair the recognition, practice or enjoyment by a woman, despite their marital status, based on equality of man and woman, human rights and essential freedoms in the civil, socio-cultural and economic fields among others. In the past, women have deprived some privileges such as education, employment, and participation in providing decisions and involvement in politics (Whyte 9).  However, women from various cultures have not yet fully been granted their rights. The percentage of women that are involved in political positions is not equivalent to that of men (Singh 62). The same applies to the area of employment. The number of men employed is higher than the number of women. It implies that women have not yet been adequately represented in all fields due to the cultural beliefs in society.

Generally, women from various cultures have suffered discrimination and kinds of deprivations from the beginning, and they have along been deprived of even such fundamental rights as access to education and property. This international concern slowly has increased via the last few years and has stemmed in efforts to get women into the life’s mainstream, primarily via social and economic activities that are aimed to empower them and therefore restore equity between men and women. Form the views; it is evident that despite that fact that women were not involved in much of the activities, they were capable of doing what men can also do. Therefore, the power of a woman today has been manifested through women being involved in power, decision making, employment, and receiving an education.
