American Marketing Association Weakness Assessment under Skills
Definition: Abilities: 75 Oral Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
An opening statementAfter a thorough reviewing of Sales and Marketing job descriptions, I have realized that I have a weak point when it comes to Oral expression.
The Body Part of Assessment
I have a strong accent and a lot of anxiety when it comes to talking to a stranger or a new customer. The accent can be a barrier when it comes to oral expression because it will be hard to express thoughts and ideas to potential clients. Lack of confidence facilitated by an accent may hinder my desire to demonstrate and explain the use of products, which may be a costly weakness in my occupation. Anxiety is a problem that I have experienced for long, which may deter a better association with potential customers and, in turn, negatively impact sales and marketing occupation. Case in point, I may find stammering or sweating when I am explaining the use of a product to a group of people. Fear and self-consciousness may affect how I connect with other people, which many times usually lead to social isolation. Anxiety and a strong accent limit my oral expression capabilities, thus limiting my success in the chosen occupation.
Concluding Remarks
Improvements in reading on oral and written communication and verbally associating with other people will be critical in facing the problem of oral expression I possess.
Two Steps for Improvement:
The first step about learning.
Citation: Chen, Tan. “Cooperative learning and oral expression competency for Chinese students of English.” (2009).
Writing: In this article, I have grasped important information that may limit students when it comes to oral expression and communication. Understanding the English vocabulary, good language learning environment, and psychological preparedness will improve verbal expression. Cooperative learning is a technique that can improve my oral expression through working in groups, interactive work, teacher guidance, and emphasis on both collective and individual responsibility.
Second step about practice.
In my occupation as a Marketing manager, I would undertake activities that allow me to directly engage with the clients both orally and in written form. I would make sure that my daily job interactions are lively and vibrant through communication with other employees and the customers as a whole. Learning how to convince and persuade customers into purchasing our products/services will help horn this ability. I would practically see my progress through oral fluency communication and a positive shift in sales.
