Drinking motives have been one major issue contributing to the increased rate of substance abuse among young individuals.

To begin with, the medical model addresses substance abuse as a disorder with varied effects and leading to mortality. According to the medical model, substance abuse, in most cases, starts at the adolescent stage that is accompanied by various changes. Due to increased brain functioning in adolescence stage, the young ones may involve themselves in drug abuse activities such as drinking alcohol or smoking. The public health model also addresses substance abuse as a social issue in society.According to the public health model, substance abuse is a disorder that threats the wellbeing of the public. On the other hand, the human services model addresses substance abuse as a disorder found to cause a lot of harm, primarily mental illness to addicted individuals.
