Supplement Essay for SUNY Old Westbury

Old Westbury, located 22 miles from New York city is a value driven institution in instilling students with understanding of the dynamics of the communicate they live and operate in. Admission into the college has shortcomings, which can however be overcome. Being a transfer student, I hope to encounter challenges resulting as a result of the new environment, new people and the new experience.

College life is very pressurizing and demanding, whereby one has is faced by social, economic and emotional difficulties. Joining the college, I expect hardship such as; isolation from both my peers and staff. Being new to the college, I am not acquainted to anyone hence having a hard time trying to cope with the situation. Coping with this challenge may require getting involved in clubs and organizations and also chatting with new friends to get acquainted to the new environment. Interaction with the staffs and having good interpersonal skills could also be fundamental.

Besides this aspect of social life, another challenge would be getting to cope with the college’s study habits and strategies. The high demanding education standards of Old Westbury, its curriculum and the lessons could pose a challenge. Being poor at some lessons could lead to lagging behind hence having a difficult in catching up. This is encompassed with the challenge of different teaching styles, which might be unfamiliar to the one am used to in my former college. To cope up with the challenge, it would require good study routines or habits, fast adjustment to their styles and curriculum requirements, strategic time management and perfection of skills in the different study fields.

Transfer of college could also lead to the loss of some earlier credits attained. This is down to the fact that some courses could be irrelevant in the new school, hence their elimination, or the new school could be lagging behind in offering a new curriculum offered in the former college. This can entirely be expensive and time consuming. Consultation with a counselor or an advisor for assistance in the new school could help solve this challenge.

The larger population present is also a challenge. Old Westbury averages a population of over 5000 students, who are drawn from diverse ethnic groups. This could be a challenge of getting to interact with a larger population than the most common in the former college. Joining clubs and organizations could help create diverse friends, which help to ease the difficulty.

Another challenge is the new living conditions, generally dormitories and free style-living environment. The dormitories could entail meeting unfamiliar faces, unfriendly conditions and unsupportive behaviours. The free living environment could have less supervision, as compared to the former college life. Exercising self-control and supervision could help me from getting trapped by the fascinating conditions.

Getting to know the resourceful areas of the new college could also pose a challenge. These areas might include faculties, which are really essential for one’s college life. This is where I can get help about my portal, communications from my instructors and any issue related to my career goal. Visiting during office hours and attending faculty seminars could be essential in my career path. This will help me not to miss any deadlines, events, any student opportunities or any relevant information.

The new college surroundings could also pose a challenge of insecurity. Due to the unfamiliarity, I can easily fall into insecure surroundings which could endanger my life. Keeping a good company and always been conscious of my surroundings could be essential in copping up with the challenge.

In conclusion, even though the challenges at the college at Old Westbury could be at times intimidating and difficult for my adaptation, I have the believe that I can overcome any challenge I come across
