Taking economics as a major

When I joined the university, I had settled for real estate, but when I got here, it was entirely not what I was expecting.  I think I had all these misconceptions about my major, which was to pursue, which is contrary to what it is. Real estate is exciting, but the skills I gain in economics are more appealing and align with my passion and the impact I would like to make in the world. That is how I settled for this decision, and I feel it suits me. I have gone through the modules of these subjects, and I can relate to them.

Seeking to switch my major into an economic major has been a process; it has taken me a while to decide if it is the right decision to make. But I revaluated myself and found that I had all the warning signs. For starters, I realized that I had selected the major for the wrong reasons. I knew that once I become a real estate manager, I would be making lots of money, and that was what inspired me to pursue, which I didn’t think beyond that. I never thought about the classes on the journey to become one. That’s why I chose ended up choosing a major that is more meaningful to me.

Also, my performance is getting worse with time; my grades are not improving even with my efforts, the elements of real estate are beyond my understanding. It has made me think that maybe my skills are elsewhere. Initially, I had set my mind on pursuing real estate, but as I started the semester, I prefer just to continue my long passion. I think there no point for me to take a major for four years on that I am not interested in. I find the class less engaging; I can barely focus on lectures and always put very minimal effort into my assignments.

Since I decide on changing my major, I have been sparing time to make myself familiar with the new field (economics). Familiarizing with the major will help manage my program well. Here are a few things that I have been engaging in to give me a foundation. First, I have been creating a rapport with other students who are taking the major through different forums. This includes seniors who have prior experience. I believe that networking will help me settle quickly in the course, considering I was in a totally different class. Also, talking to people has helped me have an idea of what to expect in the major.

Secondly, I have been developing my soft skills, which have helped me boost the technical skills which the seniors have been catching me upon. Skills such as presentation are fundamental while taking this degree as most of the work will need a presentation. I am working on how to make an excellent presentation. Also, I have started cultivating a reading culture where every day, I read a financial paper or article e.g., economic times. Still, on the reading culture, I have subscribed to commercial related newsletters.

Being a student who is switching from one sign to another, I consulted with the guidance counselor at the University for Clarifications. I wanted to make sure that I was making the right decision about this. Also, the counselor took me through the process that comes with switching majors at NYU. Real estate and economics are two very different majors, therefore learning as much maths as I could, and techniques in economics which will assist me in my course work.

However, I have learned that there is no specific way to prepare for the studies themselves. I have to realize that there are so many new terminologies that I will have to learn. I will have to make sure I make the best notes to catch up wi the rest of the students. The counselor told me that as long as I have the interest and have the necessary knowledge about economics when I actually join the class, everything will be clear and easy for me to understand. I am just hoping for the best.

I have always been keen on the various occurrences throughout the world; I have always been up to date with whatever is going on. Recently, I have found events and news involving economics more appealing to me. The ongoing coronavirus epidemic, for example, which has affected china and the rest of the world economically in away. It has, for instance, influenced the process of facemasks, which are mostly imported from China. Economics is a subject that is relevant in the modern world; I try to keep up with the trending economic occurrences with “the economist” my trusted paper for economics updates. I am more attracted to the study of microeconomics, which is the study of the dynamic between people and industries. What made me affirm that I had made the right choice is because, in economics, one can incorporate it with another major, which is what I want to do. Personally, I would like to combine my economics with sociology.

Apart from the above, economics will also enable me to prepare for this evolving world. The study of economics helps one learn about their surrounding markets, business, and governments. Therefore I will be able to respond better to situations as they emerge and also opportunities. Being a major in economics will brace me up for this changing world since I will be equipped with analytic skills as well as problem-solving skills, which will allow me to venture into many different paths. Economics is a perfect complement to other majors. This is due to its flexibility and breadth, which are of value to other business significant subjects. This is very encouraging to me because I am planning to take another course on top of that.

Gaining economic skills provides a framework for policy analysis. Taking economics as a major will enable me to understand policy issues that mold the market and future outcomes. Equipped with skills, one can appreciate trade-offs, market failures, and public finance, along with it, I will have a depth understanding of the generational impacts. These skills will help me boost my passion and values, which are to contribute towards a greater good in the world we live in. Studying economics instills analytic thinking skills and the application of mathematics in looking at economic affairs and studying economics, which involves 8using statistics and critically writing. What makes economics even more appealing is the fact that it mostlyengages with the current events, which help predict the future economic situation. Therefore, precautions can be taken if needed to prevent unfortunate occurrences. I have always found people who have majored in economics as fascinating people who can explain any economic phenomena, and ways in which the financial situation can be made better.
