paper instructions/ requirements: we are going to get a quote (not sure what the quote is but will be about teaching and social justice that draws a strong line to two of the authors of the books we read Why Knowledge Matters by ED HIRSCH and Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire so basically needing this essay to reflect these questions… these are the questions being asked…. 1. what is your definition of social justice? how do you support this idea? BASED OFF OF THE READINGS pedagogy of the oppressed by Friere and why knowledge matters by ED Hirsch. 2. how do you position yourself in relation to your definition of a socially just teacher? in other words, how will you be a teacher for social justice in this way? 3. from where does your definition of teacher for social justice originate? what sources is your definition grounded in? (consider book chapters) ——————————————- NOTES I TOOK FROM A CLASS DISCUSSION ABOUT THE PAPER: 750-1000 words Define social justice – Pull from Freire but also from Hirsch Hirsch big problem – people are learning different things in different ways [unique_solution]-We know that we are unable to catch up those who have social disadvantages -Education not valued, school system might not be well, taking care of siblings in the house hold -Social justice is to teach a common curriculum for everybody to have the same knowledge -Through vocabulary, if everyone speaks the same language and vocab, everyone will be able to teach and learn and be apart of the society. Freire : concerned about how things are taught -Obsessed with the fact oppressors get to say what the curriculum is, but concerned with the ways things are taught -How banking system of education leaves us all in the dark about how were all going about our existence. -You will never learn to speak the language of the common culture if you think you have no knowledge and act like you have no knowledge. -Wants to change the mindset to where we have a dialogue where we all learn together. Nelson Mandella once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” When evaluating education and society to the extent to which a society is just, we seek to access the quality or wellbeing of individuals in that society. Most of which involve measure levels of one or more of the of the following indicators in relation to either, or both, the national average or the individual person: material wealth, income, employment, health, safety and security, education, equality and opportunities to exercise valued human capabilities. When I hear the term ‘social justice’, it sounds like a simple concept, but it is much more complicated than that. Social justice has become very complex and nebulous. Social justice is a simple notion that all people in a society deserve fair and equitable rights, opportunities, and access to resources. It includes fairness in which a society provides, protects and recognizes the means and qualities individuals require to both determine a conception of, and live a good life. My take on social justice originates from “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Pablo Friere. —————————————– something from one of my classmates : My take on social justice originates from Pablo Freire’s Pedadogy of the Oppressed. According to Freire, “It is only when the oppressed find the oppressor… that…. Critical and liberating dialogue, which presupposes action, must be carried on with the oppressed at whatever stage of their struggle for liberation” (Freire, 2015, p. 65). What Freire is saying here is that when powerful people truly decide to humbles themselves to the level of the oppressed, real discussion on such oppression could lead to social action. Through social action can people rally behind a cause to get rid of obstacles like racism, privilege, and unequal distribution of wealth. No one would be in power and everyone would have increased sensitivity toward everyone’s perspective on society. You could say that in Freire’s approach, social issues would have a bigger impact on society because of the increased number people taking arms against them. Yet the goal of Freire’s dialogue is not only to end social injustice, but to be engaged “…in the… vocation of becoming more fully human” (Freire, 2015, p. 66). Freire is calling for people to age empathy for others. If we all care for each other, obstacles obstructing people from living the life they want will disappear. Basically, if we discuss to end such issues social action will take place, making the world more socially just.
