I have embraced modern development in technology because they have facilitated communication in many of the learning institutions. However, I have critical thoughts on some of the developments in technology since they serve as a big threat to faculties in different learning institutions. I have witnessed modern technological developments lead to the creation of online classes, thus significantly reducing the student to teacher communication and interactions. The faculty at my institution has grown frustrated with the influence caused by technologies as it reduces interpersonal relationships between learning stakeholders.
From my learning experience, I have realized huge disparities between the pre-digital era and modern learning setting due to the impact of technology on communication. During the pre-digital era, teachers used to teach the students directly as a strategy to improve the interactive social skills needed for communication. However, technological developments have downplayed the role of a physical teacher and resulted in utilizing computer-aided communication devices. As such, I think teachers tend to spend most of their time preparing online classes rather than directly interacting with their learners through face to face communication. Despite the learners being in one physical classroom, their attention is easily drifted away. I fear that the new technologies fail to articulate communication concerns between the student and the lecturer. Thus, I feel that the increased utilization of technologies limits communication between the teachers.
Through learning, I have noticed that teachers try to avert the threat posed by technologies but with little progress made. The lack of face to face communication has negatively impacted on my ability to learn since there is not a teacher to learner communication. As such, it is clear that increased utilization of technologies in learning hampers the individual ability to communicate. Hence, teachers and stakeholders in the education sector are equally guilty for failure to promote communication. My increased internet usage has greatly reduced social interactions hence thwarting my wellbeing based due to lack of face to face communication with the teacher.
Since I spend too much time on online platforms, I miss out on the chance to interact with my teacher. Teachers are meant to provide first-hand information that is trusted by the learners more than they read from books. It is not surprising to my grades have deteriorated due to increased usage of social media at school and fail to focus on my studies. I fail to understand why schools appreciate convenience due to technological developments in learning.
Although technology is helpful to me, it has ruined my interpersonal relationships. Since I started using technological developments in learning, I have destroyed my interpersonal relationship with my tutors, prospecting to learn through online platforms. I am worried about schools using current trends in the industry at the expense of fostering communication with the learners. I believe that communication through technological platforms is likely to distract learners from the main learning objective.
The above YouTube video by Henry Rubin illustrates that it’s all about the power of communication as utilized in literacy practices. I relate to the video stipulations since technology is greatly disconnecting us as it is tearing us apart in contemporary society. I articulate that technologies in the learning setting have increasingly reduced communication between stakeholders. I conclude technological developments in learning distract me, thus prefer literacy practices practiced in the pre-digital era.
