Guanajuato is one of the most popular tourist cities and municipality which is located in central Mexico. The capital of this thriving town is also called Guanajuato. The town is especially popular with tourists who are fans of the arts, in particular, the performing art. When it comes to performing arts, there is just no better place than Guanajuato. The thriving performing arts industry, the sheer beauty of the city and the near perfect climate makes Guanajuato the destination of choice for many tourist and retirees.  Fifty miles from the capital lay another popular tourist destination which is especially popular with retirees from the United States known as San Miguel de Allende. This part of Guanajuato has an elevation of 6,600 feet with fantastic views of the hills and mountains surrounding it.  Guanajuato enjoys a moderate climate with temperatures rarely going below 60 Degrees Fahrenheit in winter or going above 90F in summer. The city’s rich colonial architecture, stunning tree-filled plazas, and bright colored houses are crammed into steep slopes that arose from a ravine. There are excellent museums, handsome theaters and a superb marketplace that punctuates the streets made from cobblestone. The main roads of the city twist around the hillsides and dive into tunnels that were formerly rivers.

October is a time of the year which is very popular in Guanajuato as this is when the city hosts the world famous Cervantes festival which is one of the largest and most popular performing arts festivals in all of South America. The event is a two-week extravaganza that draws top-flight performers in various arts such as theater, music, and dance from all over the world. During the festival there are a variety of events sometimes taking place at the same time in concert halls, cathedrals, churches and great events spaces all over the city including the fantastic Teatro Juárez which lies smack in the middle of historical Guanajuato. A visit to this magnificent theater should be on every visitors “to-do” list. It is one of the most popular performing arts centers in Mexico.

Guanajuato has so much to offer. Through the centuries it has been one of the wealthiest cities in Latin America. Silver and gold mines around the town produced a torrent of wealth beginning in the 16th century and to date mining remains a significant economic activity for the residents of the city. The city has a magnificent center with trails that run up and down the steep hills earning the city a title as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1988. The city is undoubtedly extraordinarily beautiful. It is no wonder that the economy of the city is built around the tourist industry with many touring and service industry companies operating there.

Guanajuato is widely recognized for its role in the war of Mexico in the fight for Independence from Spain. The first memorable victory of the war was won in the city when Mexican Forces took control of the grain storage facility known as El Alhóndiga. Today this site is a museum with ample spaces for open-air performances. Near the Museum is the Hidalgo market which is the most significant central market in Guanajuato. For resident this is the place to go grocery shopping, to catch a quick meal and where a variety of locally made leather products and ceramics can be found.

Much of Guanajuato’s historic centers is pedestrian only due to the nature of narrow winding streets that cannot accommodate motorized traffic. To make the city accessible by motor vehicles the city has constructed a network of incredible underground tunnels which are complete with road signs.

The standards of living in Guanajuato are modest and most basic commodities such as food and clothing are relatively affordable. Accommodation in the city is readily available at very friendly rates which have been occasioned in part by the increase in the value of the American dollar as compared to the Mexican Peso. This has had an unexpected advantage to the dependent tourist economy of the city as tourist try to find the most breathtaking attractions while still looking to save on expenses. Beyond the confines of the city, there are several neighborhoods where the terrain is quite flat making the areas easily accessible by car. These communities are Marfil and LaPresa. Marfil is one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city and homes here often have ample garden spaces. La Presa got its name from the reservoir at the center of the area, and the streets here are wide enough for cars.
