THE BIOLOGY OF MIND AND CONSCIOUSNESS
Book: Myers,D & DeWall,C.N. 2017. Psychology in Everyday Life 4th ed.New York :Worth Publishers. Chapter 1 – Psychology’s Roots, Big Ideas, and Critical Thinking Tools (24 pages) For each assigned chapter, students will write a paragraph describing what they felt to be the most significant or meaningful topic, referencing at least one significant contributor, from the assigned reading. This is not intended to be a regurgitation of the material (I already know what’s in the book). Rather, the goal of this assignment is for the student to learn about historical figures in psychology and to react to course content: Did you have a positive or negative reaction to the material? How might you use something like this? Is this consistent/dissonant with your current belief/value system? Keep in mind that I only expect a paragraph 5 or 6 sentences. Week #1 Discussion: Critical Thinking In today′s world, we simply cannot take much at face value. More than ever, we need to be critical thinkers. We need to make sure that we have the facts, that we understand the arguments, that we recognize bias (others′ and our own) and that we come to the best conclusions we can – based on available information. Take a look at these slides. In this presentation, I will try to persuade you that Psychology is the best major for each of you. There are questions in slides 5, 7 & 8. Pick at least three from among these questions and post your responses. Also, feel free to raise your own questions or contribute to this discussion as you see fit.
