Introduction

In career search, one has to be very aggressive in what he or she does to achieve it. Perhaps we need first to get the meaning of the term career to understanding career prompt. The term career means an occupation that is undertaken for a better period of someone’s life with opportunities for improvement. Job entails all the activities that you take all through your life with the aim of achieving it. These activities educational life, work experience either paid or voluntary work together with leisure activities (Glossary of Carrer Education Programs, 2013). To come up with success in any given career, students ought to make good use of every available resource in the classroom. College students are not an exception, and they also need to develop well their careers through utilization of the available resources throughout their jobs in the academic field.

The features of the career of interest

All students are interested in particular, however much these careers are different; they do associate with many characteristics. These features are either positive or negative. I will discuss these drawing my illustrations from my job which is criminology.

Positive features

These attributes include;

• Ability to think critically. Most people who have undertaken their careers as criminologists have a critical attitude towards the values and the behaviors of criminals. Through academics, research has been carried out to come up with theories on reason(Criminologist Offender Profiler, 2011). Books and articles have been published detailing the findings of this research.  Criminology has helped the law enforcement build up profiles that aid in putting together events as well as motives in an offense.
• Ability to pay attention to subtle details. In police departments, criminologists have worked as consultants. I such instances, criminologists are used by detectives to due to their ability to fragment evidence and to put together a story about the offense. Criminologists have a good background in psychology and sociology and hence the ability to operate with little files as evidence.
• Integrity. Criminologists possess a high degree of integrity. This extent is to avoid building an investigation which is convincing. They also need the ability to act purposefully to analyze the evidence presented. Based on their inputs, a suspect profile is developed that is used in court to lay out a case.
• Communication. For the process of communication, to be effective, their message being conveyed by the two parties the recipient and the source. This effect calls for strong communication skills. The criminologists possess these skills. They prepare written reports which are used to set out the crime’s events.

Negative attributes

Having looked at the positive attributes above, it is also good to know some of its negative characteristics which include:

• Focusing on the negative

As a result of the nature of this career, criminologists overemphasize on the negative rather than positive qualities of human beings. It is a responsibility of a criminologist to study the facts founded on crime and also dif deeply into the mind of the criminal. The give reasons for the irrational behavior of a person and the circumstances that may lead to this ridiculous behavior. Criminologists explain the negative phenomena which are beyond the understanding of the ordinary persons and the society at large.

• Inadequate job advancements

Most criminologists work within one agency for the rest of their career period thus have limited room for career advancement. However, they are awarded promotion but receive no development to work in different offices within their career.

• Gruesome crime scenes

In case of involvement of murder or abuse, analysis of crime is difficult rendering the job an intimidating and draining one. These incidences majorly happen during the investigation of gruesome scenes of crime.

Nature of the job

Criminologists learn a wide range of factors to establish reasons why criminals are involved in crimes. They put into consideration social and psychological constraints, study crimes and arrests and research on the backgrounds of offenders to ascertain if any biological factors motivated them to perpetuate their offenses. While studying the criminal, criminologists reveal past occurrences that may have affected their offense. With the help of all this data, criminologists then design outline models for common criminals (Mexico, 2015). 1. responsible for investigating the ultimate cause and the origin of the crime.
2. They are responsible for measuring the amount of the crimes committed.
3. Involved in the research to come up with ways of preventing the committed crimes from happening in future.
4. Responsible for assessing whether the laws that are put in place to govern criminals behaviors are operational.
5. responsible for evaluating the viability of the rehabilitation techniques in an area for criminals.
6. Responsible for assessing the position of the crimes in the society.

Minimum qualifications

The minimum requirements for this career vary from one place to the other. However, other criteria are standard everywhere. For one to qualify for this career, he or she must be very competitive regarding merit and academically. The must have a good curriculum vitae, a degree or diploma from a recognized institution and a required duration of experiences as required by the employer. Plenty of internship openings possible in criminology are available for students who are contemplating the course. This work practice is a necessary supplement to a resume during job search for a full-time engagement. Upon standing hired, fresh workers get directed to the thorough criminal training and safety inspections. In entire states, criminologists are required to do a licensing exam and pass it to get considered for work.

Challenges in pursuing the career

Undertaking the criminology is quite fun and enjoyable. Despite that, there are also challenges that come across as you continue your study. These challenges include:

• Lack conducive learning environments. This deficiency lowers the grade that you could attain at the end of the course thereby not meeting your expectations.

Placement in the career path

Most students are interested in pursuing a career as criminologists. Installation to this career is neither easy nor difficult. You only need to attain the minimum requirements for placement. There are standard grades set as cut off categories to sort out the students joining the career. During class, adhere to the timetable because each lesson lasts for a fixed number of hours. In the way of this career, some shortcomings rise along the way (Tucker, 2013). Lack of work experience is one of them. It is possible to do away with this through taking part in internship programs or even voluntary activities. This idea will help to build a perfect resume and thereby becoming very competitive in the job market.

Conclusion

Criminology should, therefore, accorded the seriousness that it deserves. From the knowledge got from looking at the above points, there is need to give students a prior experience of what exactly should they expect before they enter into this career. Students should learn its positive and negative outcomes before they are enrolled in classes and eventually in the working field. Conducive learning atmospheres would improve learning experience if avail. They should be free from noise and other physical distractions. Furthermore, the challenges associated with it should get dealt with one after the other. Lastly, students at various levels either in Universities or colleges should make good use of every available resource in their institutions including teachers to acquire the best skills to carry out this career.
